Penn State’s grip on elite 2027 running back Kemon Spell is being tested—and the pressure just got heavier.
The McKeesport (Pa.) standout, who committed to the Nittany Lions back in August 2024, has now drawn interest from another national powerhouse: Georgia. The Bulldogs extended an offer to Spell this week, and he’s already planning a visit to Athens, though a date hasn’t been locked in.
“Just the love they showed as soon as I got the offer,” Spell said. “They want me to come down for a game.”
Penn State to fight off Georgia for Kemon Spell
That kind of immediate attention from a program with Georgia’s pedigree—especially one known for producing NFL-caliber running backs—should raise eyebrows in Happy Valley. Spell has made it clear he’s keeping his options open, and Georgia’s entry into the mix adds another layer of complexity to his recruitment.
Despite his commitment, Spell has been active on the visit trail. He’s already been to Penn State this season and received a personal visit from head coach James Franklin. But the competition is heating up. Notre Dame looms large, thanks to its rich running back tradition and Spell’s strong connection with Ja’Juan Seider, who recently left Penn State to join the Irish.
Spell was on hand for Ohio State’s season opener against Texas, is expected at Notre Dame for the USC game next weekend, and has plans to visit Tennessee in early November. He’s also eyeing trips to Florida State, Alabama, and Michigan. But his enthusiasm for Georgia stands out.
“I’m the No. 1 running back in the country,” Spell said. “So, I want to explore my options. God gave me this gift to go take it. So, that’s what I’ve been doing. Just leaving my options open is a good thing for my recruiting process to see where I best fit.”
For Penn State, the message is clear: the battle for Spell is far from over. With blue-blood programs circling and Spell embracing the recruiting process, the Nittany Lions will need to double down to keep one of the nation’s top talents in the fold.
