The Penn State Nittany Lions need a new head coach after moving on from James Franklin on Sunday afternoon.

Franklin was fired following the Nittany Lions’ loss to Northwestern.

The loss to Northwestern was Penn State’s third in a row. They also lost to UCLA and Oregon in recent weeks.

There’s reportedly an early name to watch to replace James Franklin at Penn State

CBS Sports’ John Talty reported on Sunday that Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule is an early name to watch at Penn State.

Rhule, who is in his third season as the head coach at Nebraska, was a linebacker at Penn State in the mid-1990s. He also served as a volunteer assistant at Penn State following the end of his playing career.

The former Carolina Panthers head coach has Nebraska off to a 5-1 start this season.

It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise if Rhule is a top option for the Nittany Lions, considering his connection to Penn State and the job he’s done so far at Nebraska. Plus, the job he did during his previous stints as a college head coach at Baylor and Temple.
