Going into the 2024 college football season, a lot was expected of Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. A former five-star recruit, you got to see some flashes of what Allar can do in a back up role as a true freshman in 2022. In those moments, it was easy to get excited about the 6-5, 240-pound rocket armed signal caller.
On paper, Allar did some good things in his first year as a starter in 2023. In 13 games, Allar threw for 2,631 yards and 25 touchdowns. Allar added another 206 yards and four more scores on the ground. In a vacuum, that is a pretty good year for a sophomore signal caller.
For those who watched every game, you know how uneven the pay really was. Against the best teams on the schedule, Allar was poor. That included really ugly games against Ohio State (18/42 for 191 yards and one touchdown), Michigan (10/23 for 70 yards and one touchdown), and Ole Miss (19/39 for 295 yards for two touchdowns and one interception). Obviously that is not going to get it done in the biggest games of the year.
Despite that rough stretch, some remain very optimistic for what Allar could develop into. That includes Pro Football Focus, which named five college football players who are set for bounce-back seasons in 2024. Allar was included in that list.
The Nittany Lions made a splash hire at offensive coordinator this offseason when they hired former Kansas assistant Andy Kotelnicki. Widely renowned as one of the most creative coordinators in college football, Kotelnicki will be expected to quickly elevate this team with Allar one of the biggest players to watch.
While the wide receiver group is in some transition, Penn State is expected to have one of the top tight ends in college football with Tyler Warren. They also boast one of the best running back duos with Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. If the offensive line is reloaded quickly, this team should be improved quickly.
There is also a lot on the line for Allar when it comes to his projection to the next level. Some NFL scouts have high opinions of the Penn State passers, some even believing that he could go very early in the 2025 NFL Draft.
