Aggies closing strong on son of future NFL Hall of Famer who could be statement recruiting victory for Mike Elko
The Texas A&M are looking to add elite recruit and son of NFL Hall of Famer to growing recruiting momentum under Mike Elko
The Texas A&M Aggies are enjoying a resurgent second season under head coach Mike Elko, sitting pretty at sixth in the country with an undefeated record after key wins over Notre Dame and the Auburn Tigers.
That success on the field has led them to plenty of momentum off the field in recruiting, as the Aggies have the fifth-ranked class in 2026 and 14th in 2027, with more commitments and visitors pouring in seemingly every week. It’s the recruiting success coupled with on-field success that the Aggies never really got with Jimbo Fisher, but it’s starting to take fruition under Elko.
That success has caught the eye of the number-one linebacker in the 2027 class, Cooper Witten. Witten, the son of longtime Dallas Cowboy and likely future NFL Hall of Famer Jason Witten, is one of the best recruits in the country, and it sounds like the Aggies have vaulted themselves to the top of the competition for his commitment.
Cooper Witten Recruiting
- High four-star recruit in the 2027 class; 20th-ranked player in the class of 2027 per Rivals Consensus
- Over 100 tackles, 12 pass breakups, and seven interceptions in his first two seasons
- Plays under dad Jason Witten, who has coached Liberty Christian since 2021
Aggies Make A Strong Impression on Witten
It sounds like Cooper Witten’s recruitment will come down to one of three schools: A&M, the Tennessee Volunteers, and the Oklahoma Sooners, with the Aggies and Sooners seemingly vying for first place for the Lone Star state product.
However, the Aggies had Witten on hand for their victory over Auburn, and he had plenty of positive things to say about his visit there and about the Aggies in general.
“The visit to A&M was really good. I got to spend a bunch of time with the coaching staff. Definitely is a place I can see myself playing at. I felt really comfortable around the coaches. They were very genuine and took the time to really connect with us and made sure we felt valued. My family was impressed, too, because it wasn’t just football talk; they showed real care for me as a person.”
Both of A&M and Oklahoma will be gunning hard for Witten as a recruit as his saga begins to unfold. However, there’s still plenty of time before he has to sign, and a lot could happen in between now and then. With both the Aggies and Sooners enjoying success thanks to their strong defenses, both have legitimate standing for Witten to entertain.
This one could come down to the wire.
