Aggies score biggest win of the season off the field, and it will propel them into the College Football Playoff
Mike Elko is here to stay as head coach of the Texas A&M Aggies after latest breaking news story
The Texas A&M Aggies are 9-0 and undefeated in conference play, and are sitting on the verge of an undefeated season that includes a berth in the SEC Championship game and a likely first-round bye in the upcoming College Football Playoff. For Aggies’ faithful, it’s been a long time coming, as far too many promising seasons have under delivered in recent seasons.
The architect of A&M’s success this season has been head coach Mike Elko. Elko, a former defensive coordinator at A&M under Jimbo Fisher, became the Aggies’ head coach at the beginning of 2024, and the Aggies haven’t looked back ever since.
Now, Mike Elko has turned down national interest, electing to stay committed to the Aggies for the long run. According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Elko is finalizing a new six-year contract with A&M to stay as their head coach for the foreseeable future.
Mike Elko’s Tenure
- Mike Elko has led the Aggies to a 9-0 start this season a year after finishing 8-5 in his first season at the helm
- As a head coach, Elko is 33-14 and 17-5 at Texas A&M
- Has built a top-ten class in the 2025, 2026, and 2027 recruiting classes already
Mike Elko is here to stay
The Aggies had to fend off interest in Elko from across the country, and were smart to get this extension done this early on into his tenure. By all accounts, the Penn State Nittany Lions were gunning hard for Elko, and were prepared to offer him the job to replace James Franklin. Elko is a New Jersey native and played for Penn. He spent much of his career in the northeast region, and Penn State is much closer to home than A&M. Given that Penn State is at least similar in terms of resources and prestige, it was a genuine worry for fans that Elko would consider taking that job.
However, at a press conference last month, Elko called the conversation a “waste of brain space”, criticizing how the media covers coaches, and he backed that conversation up with this extension.
Now, Elko gets rewarded handsomely with a contract extension that puts him in the top ten highest paid coaches in college football, with “most of” his $11m a year being guaranteed, and the Aggies get to keep a man who has completely turned the team around after years of disappointment.
It couldn’t get much better for A&M fans than it is right now.
