Mike Elko’s explosive emotions after Texas A&M’s loss to Texas Longhorns match exactly how Aggies fans must feel
Mike Elko goes off on media reps running the postgame press conference briefly following Texas A&M’s disappointing loss to Texas
Texas A&M fans have to be furious following the loss to the Texas Longhorns on Friday. Losing 27-17 to Texas, ruining an undefeated regular season, getting knocked out of the SEC Championship Game, and likely losing a first round bye in the College Football Playoff all in one day is a rough reality to accept.
Mike Elko was clearly feeling that pain after the game when he let some explosive emotions get the best of him — at least for a moment — in his postgame press conference with the media. However, it’s probably nice for A&M fans to be able to identify with their head coach’s frustrations following a disastrous rivalry loss.
Mike Elko gets angry amid Texas A&M postgame press conference
For those who may not have found their way into live postgame press conferences before, they can sometimes be a bit hectic. The coach is coming somewhat rushed from the locker room. Media members are often trying to navigate down from press boxes or back from the field to cram into a smaller-than-you-would-expect kind of room. It’s not the most conducive environment for calm to begin with. And when a team is fresh off a tough loss, tempers can easily run a bit high.
As things were getting kicked off for Mike Elko’s press conference with media following the Texas loss, the A&M head coach couldn’t help but notice the open door and loud cheers from Texas fans infiltrating his press conference. He obviously wasn’t a fan, and like anyone else, didn’t want to be reminded (loudly) that he had just lost the most important game of the season to date.
Elko erupted with a quick and angry, “Can we close the door, and run a professional press conference, please? My gosh!” He immediately apologized for his outburst, but just like Aggies fans themselves, coach Elko couldn’t help but feel the intense anger still flowing from such a devastating loss.
Texas A&M Aggies failed everywhere against Texas Longhorns
Elko sure had plenty to be upset about and shared many of his frustrations in the press conference. He addressed the fact that Marcel Reed just flat out misread coverages, especially on the game’s final interception that sealed the victory for Texas. He addressed the team’s inability to stop Arch Manning’s rushing attack on both scrambles and designed runs (where that huge TD came from).
Elko was clearly frustrated by just about everything. Credit to Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian. He called a masterful game. When the conventional run game wasn’t working too well, he adjusted, calling more outside-stretching run plays. When the horizontal passing and short game wasn’t working, Sarkisian unleashed Manning’s deep game, allowing him to connect with wide receiver Ryan Wingo for the long touchdown and tight end Jack Endries for the longest offensive play of the game.
Aggie fans will be feeling this loss for a long time seeing as this was supposed to be their moment. It was supposed to be the moment that Texas A&M finally became “big brother” in this rivalry. Instead, the Aggies fell short again. And it’s clear that no one feels that more than Elko right now. The Aggies will bounce back, but for now, everyone’s feeling the pain, even and especially the coaching staff that fans might blame for this failure for quite some time.
