Mike Elko dishes on critical transfer portal addition and makes emphatic defense of where the Aggies will play him moving forward
Mike Elko makes it clear where the Aggies will play one of their top transfer portal acquisitions.
The Texas A&M Aggies carried a strong 2025 season into the offseason, where they pulled off a strong transfer portal haul to complement their top-ten recruiting class of 2026. Now, as they are gearing up for spring workouts to begin carrying that momentum into next season, head coach Mike Elko held his first press conference to discuss their transfer portal class.
During his press conference, Elko made an emphatic statement regarding the addition of Wilkin Formby, an offensive lineman from the Alabama Crimson Tide. Formby started the season at right tackle, but was moved inside to right guard by the end of the season for the Tide. For the Aggies, however, Elko made it clear he will play at right tackle for A&M, comparing him to a former team captain.
Texas A&M comfortable with Formby at tackle
Mike Elko defended Formby’s film at tackle, and repeated why he and the Aggies’ staff were so comfortable with him staying at tackle at Texas A&M.
“I think he’s a right tackle. I think he’s an elite right tackle.f you watch him block the elite edges in this league, he does it really, really well. You don’t always compare kids, because it’s not fair to either kid, but there’s a lot of Trey Zuhn in him, just in terms of his character, work ethic, demeanor, the way he goes about his business…We lost some really talented offensive linemen, and we also lost some leadership in that offensive line room…We felt Wilkin would be a guy capable of doing both, and we were really comfortable with the total package we were getting.”
Considering Formby’s performance early on over at right tackle, this is a bit of a surprising take. However, Elko and his team of evaluators must have seen something different on film that gave them the confidence to remain so adamant about his position of the future. Formby, alongside LSU Tigers transfer Tyree Adams, will likely man the bookend spots on A&M’s reshuffled offensive line in 2026.
