Texas A&M Aggies steal talented defender away from top SEC school to replace key departures who are headed to the NFL
Former Tennessee Volunteers cornerback Rickey Gibson transferred to the Texas A&M Aggies
The Texas A&M Aggies have made another big time splash out of the transfer portal, landing an elite defender from another SEC school who will step in right away to fill a massive need on the team.
Former Tennessee Volunteers cornerback Rickey Gibson chose A&M over the rest of the SEC, and even canceled his visit to Auburn after visiting the Aggies.
What Rickey Gibson means for the Aggies
It surprised many when Gibson elected to depart from the Volunteers. After all, he was expected to be a major contributor to a secondary that has churned out NFL talents over the last few seasons.
Fellow A to Z Sports writer and Tennessee Volunteers contributor Craig Smith had this to say about Gibson’s situation with Tennessee and how he ultimately ended up an Aggie:
“The Vols’ saga with Rickey Gibson III has not been one that’s lacked for drama and happenings. Gibson nearly portaled out of Knoxville after the 2024 season, but Josh Heupel and his staff convinced him to stay. Unfortunately, an injury in the opener against Syracuse ultimately cost him the rest of the season.
Tennessee was high on him for sure, and his return to the field was penciled in as a solution next season to a troubled Tennessee secondary in 2025 (outside of Colton Hood, who was a pleasant surprise). However, the Vols made some coaching changes to the defense, with defensive backs coach Willie Martinez included, and this time Gibson is going through the portal and off to another destination. Gibson was a crucial part of the Vols’ 2024 defense, teaming with Jermod McCoy to form one of the best cornerback duos in the SEC and helping Tennessee’s defense carry the team to the College Football Playoff. The Aggies are getting a plus starter with experience in high-pressure games.”
Texas A&M lost Will Lee III and Tyreek Chappell to the NFL, leaving over 1,200 snaps vacant in the secondary. Thus, adding a player with plenty of experience and talent who can step in right away as a starter is a critical addition for A&M.
There is some risk, given Gibson’s injury history, but this is a worthwhile gamble for the Aggies to take as they look to make the College Football Playoff again in 2026.
