Mike Elko has two four-star running backs set to transform his Texas A&M offense in 2026. Having a tandem backfield with elite teammates will return Texas A&M to a few years ago when Isaiah Spiller and Devon Achane combined for 2,021 yards and 15 touchdowns. That’s the upside we can see as Rivals updated its top-10 2026 running backs class, and A&M commits KJ Edwards and Jonathan Hatton Jr. landed fourth and sixth, respectively.
As Texas A&M prepares for the departure of senior running backs Le’Veon Moss and Amari Daniels after the 2025 season, the Aggies’ future backfield is shaping up to remain a powerhouse. Under offensive coordinator Collin Klein, the program has secured two of the top running backs in the 2026 recruiting class, ensuring the run game stays a cornerstone of the team’s identity.
Early in the recruiting cycle, Texas A&M landedHatton, beating out the Oklahoma Sooners. Hatton’s physicality and exceptional field vision draw comparisons to Moss, making him a natural fit for the Aggies’ system. More recently, the program scored a major coup by securing Carthage High School’s four-star standout KJ Edwards, who chose A&M over in-state rival Texas. Edwards brings electrifying, game-changing speed and projects as a potential NFL talent, adding a dynamic element to the backfield.
Head coach Mike Elko is proactively building for the future, and both Hatton and Edwards possess the skills to contribute immediately upon arriving in College Station. Their addition signals a bright future for the Aggies’ ground attack.
Beyond running backs, Elko’s recruiting strategy emphasizes versatile athletes, particularly those with track and field backgrounds. This approach is exemplified by five-star cornerback Brandon Arrington, whose multi-positional skill set enhances the team’s flexibility.
In contrast, Texas has struggled to land key targets in the 2026 class, notably missing out on Edwards, who was a top priority for the Longhorns’ backfield. Out-recruiting their rivals is a point of pride for A&M, but Elko remains focused on laying a strong foundation in 2025. Securing two elite running backs like Hatton and Edwards is a major step toward building a program ready to compete at the highest level in 2026 and beyond.
