The Miami Hurricanes’ season will continue, as the Canes were selected as the last at large team and the No. 10 seed in the College Football Playoff. Miami will travel to College Station, Texas and face the No. 7 Texas A&M Aggies in the first round.

The 11-1 Aggies have been excellent this season and share the commonality with Miami of being the only teams to defeat Notre Dame this season. Mike Elko has done a terrific job in his second season in College Station.

However, speaking of Elko, he had an interesting comment while talking about the Canes on Sunday, referring to Malachi Toney as “the little freshman slot” who, to his credit, he acknowledged as having elite ability. Perhaps a bit of a backhanded compliment, but not egregious.

However, one Aggie came off the top rope against Miami superstar Rueben Bain, Jr. on Sunday. Texas A&M offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III was asked about facing Bain, and, well, he was pretty dismissive of the future first-round pick’s abilities.

Texas A&M OL Trey Zuhn III says of Miami DE Rueben Bain, Jr. — ‘I don’t think he’ll be a threat that we need to worry about too much’

“I haven’t had the time to watch any film yet since it just got announced, but I don’t think he’ll be a threat that we need to worry about too much,” Zuhn said. “We have great players. We have a great offensive line. So, we’ll be able to handle him.”

Ok then.

Bain is a player who’s as disruptive as any in the country, and he’s been Miami’s anchor for a Canes defense that’s gone in one calendar year from one of the nation’s worst to one of the best. This year, Bain leads Miami with 58 pressures (Akheem Mesidor is second with 44) and is the highest-graded player on the team by Pro Football Focus at 93.0. He’s the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, and he’s a sure-fire top 10 pick in the NFL Draft in April.

So, those are certainly some choice words by Zuhn. Perhaps something a little more respectful towards Bain but confident in his abilities, such as “he’s a great player, but we also have great players here, so we’re going to prepare hard and look forward to the challenge” might have been a little bit more diplomatic, and frankly, a little bit smarter.

Now, Bain has a receipt to put in his notebook with almost two weeks to let it simmer. A&M has a very good offensive line and Zuhn has been outstanding himself this year, particularly as a pass blocker. But giving one of the best players in college football added fuel when you don’t have to just isn’t a smart move.
