Q-U-I-N-N to the J-E-T-S?

Quinn Ewers’ draft status is going to be up, down and likely all over the place every week leading up to the NFL Draft. But ESPN’s latest mock draft in intriguing enough that it could be possible.

Ewers is projected to be a second-round pick and taken 42nd overall by the New York Jets, according to draft analyst Matt Miller.

Might Ewers be the ideal replacement for Aaron Rodgers? Miller seems to think it makes sense.

“It will be fascinating to watch Ewers' pre-draft process, and a strong combine could boost him into Round 1,” Miller wrote for ESPN. “The Jets need an heir apparent to Aaron Rodgers and might need that successor to start immediately. Three seasons as a starter at Texas would have Ewers ready for that task. He threw for 3,472 yards, 31 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this past season.”

Early projections had Ewers going in the third round. But reports out of Mobile, Ala., during the Senior Bowl seemed to indicate the quarterback crop was less than desired. If that’s truly how NFL scouts feel, then Ewers could move up by default.

The Jets would be drafting someone who was a three-year starter and someone who doesn’t get rattled by the pressure of playing for a high-profile team.

Miller had Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart being taken 40th overall by the New Orleans Saints. Dart and Ewers were the only two quarterbacks slotted in the second round.

Rodgers’ return is still uncertain. The four-time NFL MVP has said there are multiple factors that go into his decision. On the surface, every true pocket passer should want to learn from Rodgers while the longtime NFL veteran is in the closing stages of his career.

Ewers would try to soak up every bit of knowledge he could while Rodgers was still in the building.

How would new Jets coach Aaron Glenn affect the team’s draft process? At this point, it’s still unclear. But if nothing else, Ewers pegged this high means he’s moving up the draft boards.
