You never know what’ll end up on the other team’s bulletin board.
In 2017, Texas players felt disrespected by their Missouri counterparts who got the microphone at an Alamo Bowl pre-game function. The Tigers talked all season long about “securing the bag.” The Longhorns secured a 33-16 win.
Coach Tom Herman mocked Mizzou from the UT sideline, but that’s a story for another time.
Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt tripped all sorts of internet alarms with his weekend comments that he was going to prove “I’m going to go prove I’m the better quarterback” in the Peach Bowl.

On Monday, Texas’ Quinn Ewers offered the standard stay-cool answer most Longhorns are trained to give when being baited by reporters.
“I got to watch them play a couple times this year and obviously throughout the film,” Ewers said. “They’ve had a great year. He’s a great player, for sure. But I’m just trying to focus on what I need to do to put my team and our players in the best position to make plays and ultimately win the game.”

It’s simple. Upperclassmen should reach out to younger players and tell them “good job.”
For his part, Leavitt didn’t back away from the hubbub or the comment itself.
“I mean, I don’t know,” Leavitt said during Peach Bowl media day. “I didn’t really have any expectations going into the comment. I was just answering the comment to my fullest belief, and I hope that every player feels that they’re the best. That’s how it should be.
“You put all this work in to get to this stage, why would you not believe that yourself?”
Frankly, this is what competitors should say. Leavitt is right. The Big 12 champion Sun Devils (11-2) have put in a tremendous amount of work. They’ve been disrespected and overlooked all season long. It’s part of their brand at this point.
As for the negative reaction from Texas fans, Leavitt said, “Yeah, I didn’t mind.
“I don’t feel like publicity’s bad, especially if you’re not saying anything,” he said. “Just being able to put that on the stage, Quinn Ewers is such a big-time name in college football. Now that’s going to be a big talk and the show. Now you’re going to go into the game and people are going to be watching for stuff like that. So it’s just an opportunity for me to go prove myself.”
