Dabo Swinney may be the only one confident in Tigers’ running backs before facing Longhorns in CFP

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Monday that “nobody’s going to be 100% going into game 14.” Making matters worse, the Tigers will be without one of their key running backs Saturday in the College Football Playoffs.

Swinney said second-stringer Jay Haynes is out the rest of the season after tearing his ACL during the ACC championship game. Haynes underwent surgery on Monday, and Swinney said the focus will shift to Clemson’s backfield depth against Texas.

Only problem is Swinney detected some skepticism among the Clemson media about whether those running backs can get the job done.

“Y’all must not believe in Keith Adams, (David) Eziomume and Jarvis Green,” Swinney said. “Y’all must not believe in those guys. Y’all believed in them in the recruiting process. They were ranked real high. They get here and y’all don’t believe in them no more. We got what we got.”

Starter Phil Mafah admitted last week before the ACC championship that he was “a little banged up,” too. “I got time to heal up and give it my all. I am going to get as healthy as I can to help my team,” Mafah told Clemson Insider.

Clemson had the fifth-best rushing attack in the ACC during the regular season. The Tigers averaged 180.9 yards per game. Texas had a top-15 run defense this season, allowing just 106.4 yards per game.

Swinney downplayed the significance of the 100,000 fans expected at Royal-Memorial Stadium and talked up Texas coach Steve Sarkisian’s offensive sets.

Asked about UT quarterback Arch Manning, Swinney pointed out that the Horns only went to that late in the season, mostly against Texas A&M and for only two snaps against Georgia in the SEC championship.

As for Manning’s speed, Swinney said, “He’s different, and that’s why they’re doing that. They obviously trust him. But he’s got some wheels on him, man, and he can really move. He’s a strong runner. Smart by them in using him in some of those situations.”

The Tigers plan on traveling to Austin on Thursday so they can go through a normal home-game routine on Friday, Swinney said. The travel party will be larger than a typical road game, and even the “wives are going.”

“It’s going to be like a normal road game times a million, because this is playoff game,” Swinney said. “You gone fishin’ if you lose this one, as Charles Barkley likes to say. You win you keep going, you lose you’re done.”
