Now that the Dallas Cowboys have hired head coach Brian Schottenheimer — in a Friday night news dump — rumors have begun swirling about who will join the coaching staff.
Texas running backs coach Tashard Choice could be lured to The Star while another rumored candidate is DeMarco Murray, according to various reports.
Choice played for the Cowboys for four seasons right after leaving Georgia Tech. But putting sentimentalism aside, leaving the Longhorns right now for a shaky NFL franchise is not a smart career move.

Choice’s room had a tremendous challenge this past season, losing CJ Baxter and Christian Clark due to injuries during preseason practice. But the Longhorns running backs rallied and still had a productive season as a position room.
Texas finished 10th in the SEC this season in rushing yards per game (158.8). Jaydon Blue, Quintrevion Wisner and Jerrick Gibson all pulled together and all had various highlight moments.
Blue overcame fumble problems midseason and had sizzling returns in the College Football Playoffs. Blue had 146 yards rushing and two touchdowns against Clemson. Wisner finished with a team-high 1,064 yards and five touchdowns.
That’s a huge testament to Choice and his bulldog coaching style. Choice and coach Steve Sarkisian made Blue carry a football around all day long after, just like in the movie “The Program.”
Baxter, who was supposed to be the No. 1 starter in 2025, is expected to return next season. Presumably, if Baxter can return to his old form, he’ll give the Horns a strong boost. Quarterback Arch Manning is also more of a running threat than last year’s starter Quinn Ewers, so that’s another way for Texas to exploit things on the ground.
The Cowboys are at best the third-best team in the NFC East behind the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders.
Choice is currently making $700,000 with the Longhorns. He might have to take a pay cut playing for Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
The Horns will be a top-five preseason pick next season. Some will pick them to be No. 1.
Trading that for the Cowboys just doesn’t make any sense.
