As the 2025 college football season officially gets underway this week, Texas has yet another reason to turn heads. Freshmen Kaliq Lockett and Justus Terry have both been selected to the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year award preseason watch list.

This is yet another sign of the level of elite recruiting Steve Sarkisian and his staff have done the last few years. And it’s a sign these two could make an impact sooner rather than later.

Both Lockett and Terry were five-star signees in the 2025 class and have already earned quite a few nods of approval in fall camp.

Kaliq Lockett is already building chemistry with Arch Manning.

The five-star wide receiver from Sachse (Tex.) was ranked among the Top 15 prospects in the country last cycle. He has game-breaking ability due to his athleticism, route-running, strong hands, and big-play style.

During his prep career, Lockett had 2,698 yards receiving and over 29 touchdown receptions. He was a high school All-American and is expected to be a contributor for the Longhorns in 2025.

If Lockett can be a spark plug for this offense when Ryan Wingo and DeAndre Moore need a breather, it could severely elevate Texas’s aerial attack.

Justus Terry shocked everyone and picked Texas over Georgia. Now he’s dialed in.

Another blue chip prospect, Terry was among the best in the nation in the 2025 class. At 6-foot-5 and close to 270 pounds, he has the makings of a future superstar on the Forty Acres. He enrolled early in January and was able to experience the CFP run.

In fall camp, the Manchester (Ga.) prospect has turned heads with his physicality, position versatility, and athleticism. All-American Colin Simmons has even singled him out as a standout in fall camp. Terry has been a mainstay on the defensive line this summer – flexing his ability to play both interior defensive line and come off the edge.

If he can be a disruptive defender in a backup role up front, he could potentially carve a role in specific down-and-distance situations. Terry’s traits and flexibility potentially make him the future face of the defense who can anchor Pete Kwiatkowski’s unit.

Expectations are through the roof for both. Lockett and Terry are fortunate enough to have proven playmakers and depth in front of them so they’re not both thrust into the limelight immediately. If the hype can translate into making plays on game day, these are two of the most compelling narratives in the Southeastern Conference.
