Former Texas receiver Johntay Cook II was arrested early Tuesday in Tarrant County on two charges as his football future continues to be cloudy.

According to Travis County jail records, Cook was arrested for interference with public duties and theft of property between $100 and $750. Cook was still being held as of mid-morning Tuesday.

It’s another shocking turn for a standout athlete who once was a five-star recruit who was dismissed from the team in Austin and lasted only a few weeks at Washington.

Cook had eight catches for 137 yards and two touchdowns in the first six games of the 2024 season. This was after Cook played in all 14 games as a freshman and had eight receptions for 136 yards. He was considered the sixth-best receiver in the nation coming out of DeSoto in the 2023 recruiting cycle.

But Cook was held out of games against Georgia and Vanderbilt last October. Then, school officials announced the two had parted ways. Coach Steve Sarkisian said at the time it was a mutual decision. “We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

Cook sat out the rest of the season and then transferred to Washington. However, the school announced in January that Cook was no longer on the team less than a month after his arrival. No reason was given.

Now, it’s unclear what team will give Cook another chance, especially with criminal issues hanging over his head, no matter how minor.
