Xavier Worthy is in line to potentially star right away with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2024. After he ran an NFL Combine record 4.21-second forty-yard dash, it was clear that he was not going to drop out of round one of the 2024 NFL Draft. Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made his move to trade up with the Buffalo Bills and selected the former Texas Longhorns star wide receiver who should make a huge impact early. But that apparently almost didn't happen.
Long-time NFL scout and personnel director Michael Lombardi joined the Pat McAfee Show this week and brought some unique insight into the Xavier Worthy selection, as well as the potential trade that could have landed him with a much worse NFL team (as you can see in the post from the show below).
"New England was in high speed pursuit of [Xavier] Worthy. They wanted Worthy badly. They were making calls to get that pick. And Buffalo had them on the phone. And so was Kansas City."
The New England Patriots are completely rebuilding their roster. They have a new regime. New quarterback. New everything. For Worthy's sake, that would have been terrible to see him to land with the Patriots. Instead, Worthy landed with the Chiefs, and as Lombardi mentioned, he may end up becoming the next Tyreek Hill thanks to his speed.
And Lombardi didn't mince any words. He was thoroughly perplexed as to why the Buffalo Bills would hand Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs another elite weapon. Yes, the Patriots are the divisional rival, but on the field the Chiefs have been the real threat lately. Here's more from Lombardi speaking from the Bills' general manager Brandon Beane's perspective:
"Yeah, maybe Kansas City offered me a lot more, but why would I give Worthy to them?…Who's a weapon. Who could become the next Tyreek Hill for them…Why am I doing anything to help the Chiefs? Especially since I lost to them with 13 seconds. I missed a 44-yard field goal to send the game into overtime…I don't understand that. I would have been more than happy to give [Worthy] to the Patriots…Helping the Chiefs out would be the last thing I would want to do…And that's going to come back to bite them in the *** if Worthy is as good we might think he could be."
Worthy is a special talent, joining the preeminent NFL franchise standard of the league right now, the Kansas City Chiefs. The Bills could have doomed him to join one of the worst rosters in the NFL. Instead they gifted one of the greatest quarterbacks ever the fastest wide receiver to ever run at the NFL Combine.
Chiefs and Texas Longhorns fans should rejoice. Everyone else likely looks back on that acquisition with disdain here in the very near future given how talented Worthy is and will continue to prove he can be.
