Carthage (Tex.) running back KJ Edwards tells Orangebloods’ Jason Suchomel he is set to take two visits this season to watch the Texas Longhorns.

The four-star prospect is reportedly planning to be in Austin when the Longhorns host Texas A&M for the Lone Star Showdown. And he’s also trying to work out plans to attend the Red River Rivalry to see Texas take on Oklahoma at the Cotton Bowl.

Edwards is still finalizing plans, but Suchomel is told those two trips are “expected to happen”.

Orangebloods’ Jason Suchomel gives his take on KJ Edwards and a recent development with a Texas commit.

“The Edwards news is interesting but not entirely surprising considering the development of Texas commitment Derrek Cooper visiting Miami for the Hurricanes’ season opener,” Suchomel said. “Both players, from what we’ve gathered, are happy with their current commitments, but in the world of college football, you can’t just cut ties with a player once he commits and that’s what we’re seeing here.

“Miami, in addition to schools like Georgia and Ohio State, are going to continue to recruit Cooper despite his verbal commitment to Texas,” Suchomel said. “The Longhorns are going to continue to recruit Edwards despite his commitment to Texas A&M.”

The 5-foot-10, 180 pound rising senior ran for 1,789 yards and 23 touchdowns last season (12.6 yards per carry) while also adding 30 receptions for 383 yards and three touchdowns. In Carthage’s 4A D-II state championship victory against Waco La Vega, Edwards ran the football 18 times for 188 yards and two scores (21, 86) – earning Offensive MVP honors.

Carthage’s Kelwin Edwards wins the Offensive MVP award during the 4A DII UIL Texas State Football Championship game against Waco La Vega on Friday, December 20, 2024 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.

Gabe Brooks is a huge fan of KJ Edwards – calling him one of the best in a loaded Texas class.

“One of the nation’s top backs and among the very best in a loaded TXHSFB 2026 RB class. Highly productive with plenty of tread left on the tires thanks to glut of lopsided victories. Eclipsed 4,000-yard career rushing mark during 2024 4A D-II state championship Offensive MVP performance. Averaged 11.25 yards per carry across first three varsity seasons. Progressively getting more targets in the passing game, including 30 catches as a junior. Displays impressive ball skills and body control as a pass catcher. On the smaller half of the spectrum, but broad-shouldered and well-built at a verified 5-10, 180 with excellent testing and track speed. Plays at a different speed in pads and in elite camp settings, such as 2025 Under Armour Dallas Regional. Frequent big-play threat. Excels as a cut-and-go slasher with agility in the hole to make a man miss and hit the second level unencumbered. Slippery strong with a low center of gravity that fosters positive pad level. Not stylistically an open-field move-stringer, but capable of stacking cuts and gaining yards after contact. Sudden stop-start athlete with jump-cut burst. Not bounce-happy, but particularly dangerous when bouncing because of sudden lateral burst to gain angle leverage. Finishes runs above his weight. Advanced vision. Knows how to stay patient for blockers. Experience in myriad formations and personnel scenarios for a perennial Texas 4A contender. Can get greedy at the end of runs and compromise ball security. Occasionally needs to take what the defense gives and not try to do too much. Nevertheless, firmly one of the top backs nationally, regardless of class, with every-down competency and home run-hitting athleticism. Projects as a potential high-major impact back who could become a serious pro prospect.”
