The Texas Longhorns football recruiting machine continues to rattle off win after win in the month of June and there's more potential great news brewing this week now too.

Steve Sarkisian and company are set to host an elite five star linebacker recruit this coming weekend, and the best part is that it seems they're knocking a national rival out of the running while they're at it.

Tyler Atkinson, Five Star LB Recruit Visiting Texas

Tyler Atkinson has been widely considered a five star player for nearly three years now as one of the best–if not the absolute best–defensive talents in the nation. He's a do-everything off-ball linebacker who has racked up nearly 500 total tackles in the last three football seasons alone. Atkinson has been heavily pursued by every national power in college football throughout his entire high school football journey, but now it seems that his recruitment is down to Texas and a handful of other schools.

The Longhorns were not originally set to host Atkinson for an official this coming weekend (June 20-21). He was actually scheduled to visit the Ohio State Buckeyes instead. However, apparently something changed, and now instead of visiting Ohio State Atkinson will be heading to Austin to see Steve Sarkisian.

If this visit with Texas goes like it has for all the other high profile Longhorns targets this offseason Atkinson will assuredly spend significant time not only with the coaching staff, but also with an All-American or two like Colin Simmons and/or Anthony Hill.

Simmons, Hill, and other Longhorns stars have played pivotal roles in sealing the deal for a number of top recruits this cycle as Texas' proof of concept for player development continues to impress incoming talents.

As of this writing, most recruiting analysts and sources believe that Atkinson's home-state team Georgia may have a slight lead in this battle, but the Longhorns now firmly find themselves in the mix as official visit season is coming to a close.

If Steve Sarkisian and company can close here with Atkinson that could put them in contention to land perhaps the best recruiting class in the nation this year. Seeing as Anthony Hill will likely be off to the NFL after this season, Atkinson could have a clear path to starting from day one with the Longhorns. Hopefully that sales pitch is enough to make this happen.
