South Houston (Tex.) defensive lineman Xavier Muhammad has plenty of time to make his decision. After all, he just started his junior season. But, one program has gotten his attention early on. And it’s not very far down the road.
“What excites me most about Texas is the tradition, the culture, the energy,” Muhammad said. “It’s a program that’s on another level. I want to compete against the best, and UT has the coaches, facilities, and players to push me to get there.
“It’s not just about football though. I’m also focused on the academics, the support system, and the chance to grow as a leader. Austin is an amazing city, and the Longhorn family is strong. I’m excited to keep building relationships with the coaches and see how I fit into the future of Texas football.”
Xavier Muhammad is listed as the No. 90 overall prospect in the country, per Rivals.
He is the No. 5 defensive lineman in the 2027 class as well. Listed as 6-foot-3, 250 pounds, he anchors a defensive front for South Houston in Texas District 22-6A. Last year, his performance as a sophomore earned him a nod as the Co-Defensive Newcomer of the Year.
Muhammad is a three-sport athlete to boot. When he’s not on the gridiron, he’s averaging 15.1 points and 12.5 rebounds per game on the hardwood and throwing the shot put 47’5″ in the spring on the track.
Despite the intrigue with the in-state program, Muhammad also has his sights on an out-of-state program. In fact, he is just coming off of a visit there.
“You can see Miami is really building something special,” Muhammad said after Sunday’s victory over Notre Dame. “The energy, the way they competed, the coaches locked in, that shows the program is heading in the right direction. They’re not just talking about it, but they’re also showing it on the field. Coach Cristobal is about winning and developing players, and that’s big for me. He knows what it takes to get to the next level, and you can feel how much he cares about the players. The culture he’s building is different, and being a part of that would be huge for me.”

“It was crazy,” Muhammad told 247Sports’ Tom Loy. “The energy was unreal from start to finish. Everyone was crunk and loud. It actually felt like the whole city showed up. Definitely one of the best atmospheres I’ve been in.
“They looked super physical and ready,” he said. “You could tell they were playing like they had something to prove. The defense was unstoppable. I’m looking forward to following them all season.
Long way to go in this one, but it appears to be a Texas vs Miami battle.
Steve Sarkisian and Mario Cristobal have gone head-to-head before. Earlier this summer, the Longhorns landed two Florida commits – earning commitments from blue chip prospects Derrek Cooper and James Johnson.
In fact, Johnson was also at Hard Rock Stadium on Sunday. The Hurricanes are working to flip him before national signing day.
