On Tuesday, Texas starting quarterback Arch Manning met with local media after another practice concluded at fall camp. When asked about what his grandfather, college football legend Archie Manning said about his future, Arch gave an interesting response.

“I don’t know where he got that from,” Manning said. “He text me and apologized about that. I’m really just taking it day-by-day right now.”

In a feature story with Texas Monthly, the elder Manning was asked about Arch’s future at Texas and a potential jump to the NFL.

“Arch isn’t going to do that. He’ll be at Texas.”

Arch Manning also spoke about waiting his turn to start in the burnt orange.

“It definitely helped me a lot looking. I was definitely not ready to play my freshman year,” Manning said. “I learned a lot and learned a lot about myself and I think it’s helped me a lot.”

I think this is a big reason for the hesitation to rule him as a one-and-done SEC starter. We all know Manning is talented and has all the tools to eventually be an NFL quarterback. But would he be ready after the 2025 season? Most expect him to work through some growing pains this season while also showing signs of being an elite signal caller.

When he had opportunities last season, he exhibited signs of what head coach Steve Sarkisian and others expect him to be. He made some big-time throws, showed toughness when running the football, and was able to lead the offense when Quinn Ewers was hurt. But, this doesn’t mean he’s going to be ready after one season.

Arch Manning isn’t paying attention to the preseason hype.

“I think that’s just who I am, I’m not a guy who seeks out the media,” Manning said. “It’s really about the team, 11 guys on the field. We’re excited right now, I’m just having fun. I dreamed about being in this position so I’m not going to take it for granted.”

Manning mentioned when he first arrived at Texas, he sought out the leaders in the locker room.

“The guys who had the most respect were the guys who worked hard and took it seriously.”

He singled out Jordan Whittington, Jonathan Brooks, and Kelvin Banks – pointing out where those players are now and how things are “full circle”.

Texas opens the season August 30 against No. 3 Ohio State and first-year starter Julian Sayin. History is against the former five-star prospect. In the last 20 years, if a quarterback is making his first start against the No. 1 team in the country, teams are 0-18.
