If Mel Kiper is right, Longhorns QB Quinn Ewers has some work ahead to impress NFL scouts before draft
Ewers has dropped two spots in Kiper’s 2025 NFL Draft QB rankings from December
Quinn Ewers probably knew he wasn’t going to be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. But where could the now-Texas ex land exactly?
ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. released his updated draft rankings on Tuesday, and Ewers has dropped from fifth to seventh among quarterbacks in the NFL Draft.
Kiper had Ewers fifth as of late December. But he scrambled the rankings upon completion of the College Football Playoffs, moving Ole Miss’ Jaxson Dart up ahead of Ewers and adding Ohio State’s Will Howard to the top 10.

This is how it will be for Ewers for throughout February, March and most of April. One day, he’s up. The next, he’s down. Today, he’s good. Check back tomorrow to see what happens next.
Most of the NFL Draft media industry is all about speculation. Ewers won’t play a single snap of real football from now until draft day.
Still, it’s worth noting who Kiper has at the top of his board, as it is likely shaped by his discussions with NFL personnel.
Kiper currently has Shedeur Sanders (Colorado) ranked No. 1 followed by Cam Ward (Miami). Both make logical sense as they had terrific seasons for their teams. Sanders is widely viewed as the top quarterback in the draft.
Kiper has both Sanders and Ward among his top-five picks among all players in the draft. In fact, those are the only two quarterbacks Kiper projects to go in the first round.
“You won't find a tougher or more resilient quarterback prospect than Sanders, who took 99 sacks over the past two seasons but still put up really strong numbers,” Kiper wrote on ESPN.com. “I'm always impressed watching him throw on the move, rolling either left or right.”
Kiper said of Ward: “When things break down around him, Ward can extend plays with his legs, either throwing on the move or picking up first downs as a runner. I like his toughness, swagger and confidence.”
Dart is the one who jumped in Kiper’s updated rankings, going from seventh to third. That knocked Jalen Milroe (Alabama) down a spot to No. 4.
Kyle McCord (Syracuse) and Howard were ranked fifth and sixth, respectively. Ewers was No. 7. Dillon Gabriel (Oregon), Kurtis Rourke (Indiana) and Tyler Shough (Louisville) round out the top 10.
