National college football analyst thinks Arch Manning is playing ‘too fast’ right now – has an idea for a remedy
Arch Manning continues to struggle and there could be an easy fix before SEC play starts.
FOX Sports’ Joel Klatt talked about Texas Longhorns’ quarterback Arch Manning on his show Wednesday. He had some thoughts on why Arch Manning has struggled out the gates this year.
“He is too fast. He is pressing and he is ahead of offense,” Klatt said. “Arch gets back there and he has time to throw and then before the picture can develop you can tell his eyes are already shifting from the first place he’s looking to the second place he’s looking.
“He’s going from one to two before the picture ever materializes. He’s ahead of the timing of the offense,” Klatt said. “When that happens, typically, you lose your balance, you lose your pocket presence, your eyes go down because your anticipating the clock is moving too fast.”
I think Joel Klatt is on to something here.
There’s no doubt in my mind Arch Manning knows the offense front, back, forwards, and backwards. And as Klatt is saying here, it’s almost a detriment. Manning is speeding things up in his mind and trying to do too much and is putting too much on his own shoulders.
There’s been several times this year you can tell he sees the opening, he sees the open receiver, and throws it at the receivers’ feet. Those types of throws are typically a sign someone is pressing. Klatt also talks about the reasoning behind this.
“And when you do let go of the football, you’re moving so fast in your own mind you typically throw those balls short. Why? Because you jump at them,” Klatt said. “Your front foot gets out a little bit too high, you jump at the throw, and the ball tends to nose down and be short.
“If you’re looking at the bulk of the incompletions, they’re underthrown. Even when he’s just trying to throw a quick-hitter on the outside. It’s too far low and away, everything is trending down and away from the wide receivers,” Klatt said. “Very few passes from Arch this year have been in rhythm and in the frame of the wide receiver. That’s what’s going on right now.”

National analyst believes Steve Sarkisian may need to bench Arch Manning to eventually get the best out of him
This is a terrible idea and I’m going to tell you why.
Joel Klatt seems to have a basic fix here.
It’s what I’ve been saying for a few weeks now. It just looks like he needs to slow down, take a breath, and relax. Klatt is pushing the same idea here. Everything is sped up, he looks like he is scrambling to process everything when he has the protection and has open receivers.
I’m not a quarterback or a quarterback guru or even a professional analyst on television. But it seems obvious to me the fix is just for Manning to play within himself and the offense. Steve Sarkisian is going to continue to put him in good positions to make plays. Just chill and make the play. He’s more than capable.
And this weekend coming up is a recipe to get right against a putrid Sam Houston pass defense.
