Texas Longhorns

There's an obvious move that the Texas Longhorns should (try to) make that would make his team better and would also anger some folks in Tuscaloosa.

Texas is in need of a running backs coach after Tashard Choice left Austin earlier this month to join the Detroit Lions' coaching staff.

Numerous names have been tossed out as a potential replacement for Choice at Texas, but the best choice to replace Choice (no pun intended) might be Alabama Crimson Tide running backs coach Robert Gillespie.

Gillespie is one of the holdovers from the Nick Saban era on Kalen DeBoer's staff so it's not like he has a lengthy history with the current coaching staff at Alabama.

Sarkisian, who was on Saban's staff at Alabama for three seasons (2016, 2019, and 2020), and Gillespie never coached together in Tuscaloosa, but they have an obvious connection via the time they both spent coaching under Saban.

Gillespie, who has also spent time in the SEC as an assistant coach at South Carolina and Tennessee, is an ace recruiter who has more than proven his worth as a position coach. He also has some experience at Oklahoma State as an assistant (two seasons — 2009 and 2010), which gives him some experience in the Texas recruiting footprint.

There's no guarantee that Gillespie would leave Alabama for Texas if he's offered the job, but career wise, it seems like an easy choice. Texas is clearly a program on the rise while Alabama's outlook is cloudy at best after taking a step back in 2024.

Swiping Gillespie from Alabama wouldn't just be a home run hire for the Longhorns, but it would also get under the skin of Crimson Tide fans. And I think every SEC fan is fond of being a thorn in the side of one of their top rivals.
