Texas Longhorns’ running back Tre Wisner did not play last weekend versus San Jose State. After a strong Week 1 performance against Ohio State, the only returning 1,000-yard rusher in the country was in street clothes due to a leg injury.
“He’s got a leg injury that we held him today, and we just didn’t think it was the right thing to do to kind of force the issue with him,” Sarkisian said after the game. “I wanted Christian to play more. I wanted Jerrick to get opportunities. And so it worked out for us that way.”
Furthermore, Sarkisian went on to say he won’t “rush to push guys out at this juncture of the season.” He also said the staff will continue to rehab his injury and keep monitoring it this week.
Steve Sarkisian still praises Tre Wisner’s ability to inspire his teammates.
“I don’t know if we have a better leader on our team right now than Tre Wisner – the energy he provides, the positivity he brings every day,” Sarkisian said on the 3rd and Longhorn podcast this summer.
One player who stepped in for Wisner on Saturday was CJ Baxter. So far this season, he has run for 104 yards on 23 carries. Wisner spoke with the media in the offseason about his comeback and their bond.
“Me and Cedric, we came in together,” Wisner said before the 2025 season. “So, there’s nothing like being able to play with the running back that you came into college with. He went down last year, so that kind of tilted things. But just being able to have him back in the room with us, and me and him attacking defenses like we’re about to – it’s going to be crazy.”

Texas Longhorns running back draws comeback inspiration from a national champion – aiming for big 2025 season
Texas Longhorns running back CJ Baxter is fresh off of his season-ending knee injury recovery and is already turning heads in fall camp. The former No. 1 overall running back recruit in the country in the 2023 class was asked if he was “100 percent” Thursday and he couldn’t help but smile. “Yeah, I feel […]
Sarkisian says he’s not “completely” ruling Wisner out for Saturday’s game against UTEP (3:15 p.m. CT/SEC Network), but he would list him as “doubtful” at this point in the week.
Wisner is a leader and someone the offense can lean on. Maybe not this week against the Miners or next week against Sam Houston, but the Longhorns’ returning leader in the run game will absolutely be needed versus Florida and the rest of the SEC schedule this year.
Wisner and Baxter combined for 120 yards on 26 carries against Ohio State. Despite the loss, there were some good runs and both looked solid behind a retooled offensive line. They had long runs of 13 and 14, respectively, but I thought the tempo helped them in certain down-and-distance situations.
This week could be a chance for Sarkisian to tinker with this exact strategy to see how Baxter can handle the workload solo if Wisner can’t go for the second week in a row.
