After spending weeks nursing a hamstring injury, Wisner is finally healthy, and his impact extends far beyond rushing yards. The young back had a strong performance against Oklahoma last Saturday, running for a season-high 94 yards on 22 carries and catching five passes for 34 yards. His efforts were crucial in the Texas Longhorns’ 23-6 victory, helping the offense improve against a tough Oklahoma defense. Looking forward, his presence changes how defenses line up, how Steve Sarkisian calls plays, and how Arch Manning is perceived under center. In a season where every throw is being scrutinized through the lens of his family’s legacy, a rejuvenated ground game could be exactly what resets the narrative around Texas’ young QB.

How Wisner’s return could change for Manning

When Manning has balance, he looks composed and commanding. When he doesn’t, the offense stalls. That pattern has played out all season. In games where Texas rushed for over 150 yards, manning has completed 72% of his passes with a passer rating near 160. When the run game sputters below that mark, his completion rate dips to 58% and the offense struggles to sustain drives.

Enter Wisner, the back Sarkisian calls “mentally and physically tough,” the runner who can turn second-and-long into third-and-manageable. A healthy Winser should help Manning to improve his third down completion percentage, an essential part of proving yourself as a young QB.

Wisner’s style directly complements Manning’s strengths. He hits holes fast, keeps defenses honest, and forces safeties to play downhill. That matters because Texas’ passing game thrives on play-action and rhythm throws—two areas where Manning is most efficient.

With Wisner back, linebackers bite harder on fakes, safeties cheat closer to the line, and Sarkisian can reopen large portions of his playbook. The slants, bootlegs, and seam routes that were too risky when the run game was stagnant now become lethal again.

Wisner also brings something more intangible—control. His ability to extend drives by absorbing contact and churning out tough yards gives Manning more manageable situations. Second-and-5 is a lot different than second-and-10 for a QB still learning how to manipulate defenses.

The Reputation Factor

Fair or not, Arch Manning’s name comes with high expectations that few 20-year-olds could meet. Every misread becomes a headline, every interception a talking point. But football reputations don’t change through press conferences—they change through results. And results often depend on help.

A stable running game will let Manning show the version of himself that Texas coaches have been waiting to unleash: efficient, confident, and surgically precise. When Manning doesn’t have to force throws into tight coverage or carry the offense on his arm, his decision-making sharpens. That’s when his precision (the trait that made him the nation’s top recruit) starts to separate him from the noise.

Sarkisian has seen this before. When his backfield is balanced, his QBs thrive. From Mac Jones at Alabama to Quinn Ewers last year, Sarkisian’s best offenses have been built on rhythm, not reliance.

With CJ Baxter still working his way back from an injury and true freshmen Christian Clark and James Simon learning on the job, Wisner’s health becomes the hinge point for Texas’ late-season surge. His ability to sustain drives will directly influence Manning’s comfort, and by extension, his credibility.

Wisner’s return won’t erase the growing pains of a young QB, but it can amplify his strengths and quiet the critics. For Arch Manning, that might be the difference between a season defined by scrutiny, and one remembered for maturity.
