The Texas Longhorns have begun to catch fire on the recruiting trail over the last month. Nine commits in 30 days. All of them blue chips except for the special teams types (which Texas did need to address).

Unfortunately, all that June and early July momentum doesn't mean that Steve Sarkisian and company will shoot 100% as they attempt to bring in their fifth straight top five recruiting class.

The Longhorns surprisingly lost a battle for a top 2026 four star edge defender recruit on Saturday, and it stung just a little bit more than usual because it came against bitter rival Texas A&M Aggies.

Texas Longhorns lose battle for Bryce Perry-Wright to in-state rival Texas A&M

Bryce Perry-Wright has been a consensus top 50 player in the country for over two years now. Despite his slightly shorter stature, Perry-Wright has shown to be wildly disruptive force four years in a row, consistently impressing every step of the way throughout high school.

Over 40 programs offered him a scholarship, with both major Texas programs getting in on his recruitment quite early. Texas and Texas A&M both managed to pull an official visit (as his final two stops in June), but in the end Perry-Wright committed to the Aggies this weekend.

If Texas had successfully won Bryce Perry-Wright that would have given the Longhorns the best defensive line class in the entire country, but now they'll need to look elsewhere to complete their 2026 class.

The good news? The Longhorns defensive front group is still stacked for their 2026 recruiting class.

They just landed five star edge defender Richard Wesley at the end of June. Plus, high four stars Vodney Cleveland, Dylan Berymon, and Corey Wells all committed in June along the defensive line as well.

The Texas Longhorns have sent seven defensive line and edge defender prospects on to be selected in the NFL Draft over the last three years alone, so it's no surprise that Steve Sarkisian and his staff continue find success recruiting the position.

However, Texas needs to keep building depth in their defensive front group. Why? As of now it looks as if Texas is likely going to be forced to roll out three transfers along the defensive interior this season. Their 2025 and 2026 hauls look promising there so far. Texas fans just need to hope Sarkisian bounces back again real quick, filling out the rest of the 2026 recruiting class soon.
