Steve Sarkisian confident comments suggest Texas Longhorns ‘ready to go on a real heater’ following Florida win
Longhorns storm into November addressing all the questions they faced coming out of October
Saturday’s 49-17 win over Florida was “probably our most complete game as a football team,” according to Texas coach Steve Sarkisian.
And it couldn’t have come at a better time for the fifth-ranked Longhorns (8-1, 4-1 SEC).
With a critical November just getting started, Texas addressed just about every need and every want this team had coming out of October. It was a full day of complementary football, something Sarkisian preaches and admires when done right.
“I told the guys, I felt like we’re getting ready to go on a real heater, you know, that we were going to play our best football here in November and it was going to start this week,” Sarkisian said. “And they did it, you know? So I was proud of them, that’s what I told them.
“I was grateful for their commitment to what we were asking of them throughout the bye in preparation, from their intent, their sense of urgency of what was going to be needed.”

Quarterback Quinn Ewers needed to reassert himself. He threw five touchdowns and sat most of the second half. Asked if he had fun, Ewers said, “A good amount.”
More receivers wanted to get involved. Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond, Gunnar Helm and DeAndre Moore Jr. all had either touchdown catches or explosive plays for 20 yards or more.
The running backs wanted to contribute more. Freshman Jerrick Gibson had his first 100-yard day as a Longhorn. Jaydon Blue had 127 total yards, and Quintrevion Wisner threw in 59 more. All three running backs combined for three touchdowns.
For any of this to happen, the Texas offensive line needed to play better, obviously. The Texas offense had 12 explosive offensive plays (20 yards or more) compared to Florida’s two.

“For us to come out here and play at a high level today and put up points for our team,” Blue said, “it means the world to the backs.”
Facing Florida’s third-string quarterback, the Texas defense wanted to have a great outing. Aidan Warner started in place of the injured DJ Lagway and completed just 12 of 25 passes for 132 yards and threw two interceptions.
Texas turned three turnovers into 21 points and generally didn’t give up much until the second half when it was long over. Florida’s 329 total yards were bulked up in garbage time.
Defensive tackle Alfred Collins needed to have a big day with his sidekick Vernon Broughton suspended the first half for a targeting violation against Vanderbilt. Collins tipped one ball at the line of scrimmage that led directly to an interception and got his mitt on another one.

Fellow defensive lineman Trey Moore had a huge day with a fumble return and a key pass break-up. Jermayne Lole also had two tackles and stuffed the middle for the first three quarters.
“If you can’t get there in the rush, get in the way,” Collins said. “It’s the best way to demoralize the quarterback.”
The Longhorns also wanted to get a lot of players onto the field. The coaching staff rotated a slew of guys in the second half, including youngsters Kobe Black (six tackles), Ty’Anthony Smith (five tackles) and Jordon Johnson-Rubell (two tackles).
Now, Texas has to bottle all of this momentum and take it on the road to Arkansas next week in Fayetteville.
“And this is step one of four here in this month,” Sarkisian said, “and we’ve got a great challenge going on the road next week, but I think this is a good starting point for us, for sure.”
