When you mention Texas football, people tend to think about head coach Steve Sarkisian and his offensive prowess. Quarterbacks Quinn Ewers and Arch Manning get a lot of the headlines, as well as the long list of talented pass catchers they have had over the last couple of years. The 2024 version of this program has found a completely new identity, and a potentially secret weapon down the stretch of the season.

Heading into the season, most fans were juiced up about Cedric Baxter as the running back for this Longhorn team. There were others who were very high on Jaydon Blue, who is an outstanding pass receiver out of the backfield. Those were expected to be the top guys in that room.

Not many expected sophomore Quintrevion Wisner to become a huge volume getter, or better yet the team’s best running back. That’s exactly what we have seen over the last few games, developing into one of the best ball carriers in the country. Over the last two games against Kentucky and Texas A&M, two good defenses, Wisner has rushed for 344 yards.

While Wisner isn’t the biggest runner at 6-0 and 200 pounds, he runs with tremendous contact balance. The Texas native has been feasting with second effort runs, and has been finding hidden yardage consistently. Wisner is a good overall athlete who is tough to handle once getting to the second or third level.

Most would view a matchup against Georgia as a difficult one for opposing running backs, especially in a high pressure situation like the SEC Championship Game. The Bulldogs, however, are struggling big time from a run defense perspective. Over the last two games, their run defender has been gashed against UMass (you read that correctly) and Georgia Tech, giving up a combined 486 rushing yards in those two weeks.

While that 243-per game average is impressive, both teams were also very efficient as well, averaging 5.7 and 5.5 yards per carry respectively while scoring two and three touchdowns on the ground. The Georgia run defense needs to do some soul searching because a player like Wisner is a unique challenge, and has the talent to dominate on Saturday.

With the loss earlier in the season, Texas will be looking for some revenge this weekend. If they are able to come out with the victory over the Bulldogs, you can bet that Wisner will have a big hand in it. The sophomore feels set up to have a huge day.
