The regular season is already one-third over. Some of the numbers the Texas offense is putting up defy logic. They’re on pace to obliterate all kinds of school records.
And they’ll likely get more chances than ever, too.
Before we go any further, it should be noted that No. 1 Texas plans on going deep into the postseason. It’s possible the national champions, whoever that may be, ends up playing 16 or 17 games. Every game counts toward the season total.
Texas’ 2005 national championship team set the standard for offensive excellence. Vince Young’s squad scored 652 points and averaged 50.2 per game during a 13-game season.

Five reasons why Texas Longhorns football is ready for the SEC and national championship run
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian looks around the locker room and the practice field and sounds downright giddy at what he sees. The No. 1-ranked Longhorns are 4-0 heading into their SEC opener. The offense lost its starting running back in training camp and saw its quarterback sit for 1 1/2 games, and it still averages […]
This year’s Texas squad could play 13 games before the College Football Playoffs even begin.
Still, Steve Sarkisian’s Longhorns have scored 190 points in four games, the seventh-highest total among all FBS teams through four games. That’s an average of 47.5 points per game.
Let’s assume Texas won the SEC and the national title. The Horns would be on pace to score 760 points over a 16-game season.
The offense was rolling so well last Saturday against Louisiana-Monroe that Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said he wished there were some easier throws for quarterback Arch Manning to boost his completion percentage. Manning was throwing too many deep balls.
“We looked up, I mean, man, there’s a lot of shots on here,” Sarkisian said. “And I think part of that as a byproduct of we like those plays going into the game. Part of it was a byproduct of I think Arch is a really good deep ball thrower and gives guys chances to go make plays on those shots down the field and his willingness to go do that.”
But what’s more impressive is how Texas scores once it gets close. The Longhorns have scored 21 touchdowns on 23 trips inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. That’s a mind-boggling success rate, one that Texas hasn’t even come close to in recent years.
Pushing the tempo and converting near the goal line are two major keys to success for any offense, especially one that wants to win the SEC.
Sarkisian’s goal isn’t to blow people out; he simply wants one more point than the opponent. But winning big isn’t bad, either.
