Texas football players believe blowout win over Florida is the rocket fuel Longhorns need for deep CFP run
No. 5 Texas got its mojo back just as Georgia and Miami were stumbling in losses
At this point in the season, teams are what they are. Their identity is cured, and there’s no turning back. If your team has problems, it’ll be addressed in the offseason.
Now, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian firmly believes it’s all about momentum. You either have it or you don’t.
The fifth-ranked Longhorns spent the off week getting healthy and retooling themselves. The team that showed up Saturday to obliterate Florida 49-17 looks ready for a strong November run and deep playoff push.
The Horns, by all appearances, got their mojo back — and right at the perfect time, too. Georgia and Miami, two teams ahead of UT in the College Football Playoff rankings, both lost on Saturday while Texas blew Florida’s doors off.

Steve Sarkisian’s anger gets the best of him and it helps Texas football blow out Florida in DKR
No. 5 Texas comes roaring to life after critical fourth-and-1 deep in UT territory that was a huge Sarkisian gamble
“It felt like a lot of stuff was going right,” running back Jaydon Blue said. “It felt like that, but it all starts with our quarterback. I think Quinn (Ewers) was very dialed in and we all follow him and his lead. We did a good job of making the plays when they were presented to us, and we played complementary football.
“The defense got turnovers, made stops, and we turned those into points. When we’re doing things like that, we’re very hard to beat.”
Sarkisian said last week the offense was close to a breakout performance. He compared it to a home run hitter in baseball or a 3-point shooter in basketball. Sometimes, they need to see the ball sail over the wall or the ball go through the nets.
The Horns just needed to see a few big plays, to stay with the analogy, and the flood gates would open. Matthew Golden caught a 29-yard touchdown catch to start the scoring. Gunnar Helm hauled in a 22-yarder down the seam. Then, before the Gators knew it, they were down 42-0 in the third quarter and well on their way to 562 total yards.
ABC commentator reveals Arch Manning’s classy gesture toward Texas QB Quinn Ewers
Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers threw five touchdown passes and had a relatively easy day in a blowout win over Florida. Ewers played so well, coach Steve Sarkisian pulled his starter in the third quarter and inserted backup Arch Manning. You remember him, right? “You know, practice is sometimes hard to tell, but I do feel like in practice, the intent was there,” Sarkisian said Saturday. “Sometimes that middle stretch of the season, you can feel like you’re just kind of going through the motions, and like I was telling (media) this week, I felt like this was a great week of practice, because I could hear us. Like, we were having fun on the practice field.
“We were working, we were running, we were competing with one another,” he added. “Today, what I felt like, I felt like we looked really fast. We looked like a fast football team. We looked like a team that’s very dangerous in the open field, that if we can make the first guy miss, it’s probably going to be an explosive and I think that's what showed up. And it showed up from multiple players today.”
It was a total team effort, too. The defense created three turnovers, and the offense cashed in for 21 points.
“This was a big game on all three phases of the team, just to be able to have the momentum and carry us the rest of the season,” defensive end Trey Moore said. “We’ve got a lot of games to play this season still, so it's important to have that momentum and have that carry us through the year.”
