Texas Longhorns get the chance to address sudden long-term need with a recruit they whiffed on only one year ago

On the heels of watching four-star 2026 prospect Jamarion Carlton become a priority recruit for Texas Tech and Baylor after trending heavily for Texas until the last minute, the Longhorns might be gifted a treat. The Longhorns already have five-star Richard Wesley in their bag for next year, but the long-term health of the pass-rusher position could always be better.
On Monday, freshman KingJoseph Edwards entered the portal with four full years of eligibility remaining. The Syracuse edge-rusher logged three sacks in five games. Texas chased Edwards last year before he shockingly ended up in Western New York.
He has the ability to join a program immediately, and Steve Sarkisian must consider whether he'd replace Carlton's slated roster spot with Edwards.
Colin Simmons and Wesley will be the stars of the program over the next few years, but they'll only play together for one season before Simmons can jump to the NFL. Texas will also lose Ethan Burke after this year. But it's an incredibly young group behind Burke.
Transfers are always a risk to happen, but the Longhorns stockpiled three true freshmen this past cycle, and their primary backups this fall have a combined five years on campus. There's no rush to have youth added to the program right now, but they need production they can bank on.
Edwards could still fit the bill, but it's risky to potentially entertain adding an individual who is seeking immediate NIL dollars and playing time. He could work his way into Texas' rotation, but it might also disrespect a locker room filled with other hungry young guys who have been in the trenches with the program already.
