On Monday, Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke with the media ahead of August 30’s opener versus Ohio State. The fifth-year head man in Austin says he expects offensive lineman Trevor Goosby to be ready.
Last year, Texas fans quickly learned about Goosby and how good he was when he was thrown into the fire when first-round pick Kelvin Banks Jr., went down with an injury. Last year at Peach Bowl media day, he was honest about his head space as he ran onto the field.
“I thought I was going to be a little more nervous than I was,” Goosby told reporters Monday at Peach Bowl media day. “As soon as I got in there, it just felt natural. It just felt like practice. The stadium was super loud, but I was super focused on the field. I was able to lock in and do pretty well.”
Now, he will be charged with keeping Arch Manning’s jersey clean and paving the way for Tre Wisner and Co., to attack a Buckeyes defense replacing A LOT from last year’s title team.
Bruce Feldman of the Athletic released his “Freaks List”, as he does every year.
Feldman is quite high on Goosby. And he’s not the only one.
“Once ranked as the 34th best offensive tackle prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, Goosby has proven to be a terrific evaluation. As a redshirt freshman last season, he started two games, one at left tackle and the other at right,” Feldman said. “PFF gave Goosby an 80.8 pass blocking grade for the season, which was higher than Cameron Williams, Texas’ starter at right tackle, although the freshman had a much smaller sample size.
“At 6-foot-7 1/3, 311 pounds, Goosby clocked a flying 10-yard sprint of 1.44 seconds, grading at an extremely high level in terms of his acceleration for an offensive lineman. His max speed of 20 mph this offseason was almost as impressive,” Feldman said. “He bench pressed 365 pounds and jumped the highest of any of the Longhorn O-linemen. His leaping ability and body control are also evident in this video of him doing a 360-dunk last spring.”
Last year, Trevor Goosby played 319 snaps.
261 of those came against Texas A&M, Georgia, Clemson, and Arizona State. He started against Georgia and Arizona State and is poised to be one of the best up front for the Longhorns in 2025.
He’s an elite athlete who has basketball feet and is expected to step right in for Banks this season. Wisner, CJ Baxter, and others are hoping he can pave the way for another great year running the football. Wisner is the lone 1,000+ yard rusher returning in college football and Manning is now THE guy on offense.
The hype surrounding Manning will be directly affected by how Goosby and his teammates respond Saturday. The offensive line is replacing four starters and battled injuries in fall camp. Now, the football is very real and the scoreboard actually matters.
DJ Campbell and Cole Hutson are back and both have over 1,000 snaps under their belt. There’s a ton of buzz about Goosby and Neto Umeozulu and Brandon Baker are the other two presumed starters.
