It was a tremendous month of July on the recruiting trail for the Texas Longhorns. Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorn staff were able to close on several key targets, including five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson and running back Derrek Cooper. They managed to beat several other elite programs in the process as well.

Texas had such a strong month that they were chosen as one of the 10 biggest winners for the month of recruiting by Rivals national recruiting analyst Adam Gorney. They were joined by Alabama, Georgia, Oregon, LSU, Tennessee, Florida, Texas A&M, UNC, and Texas Tech on that list.

Here’s what Gorney had to say about the month for the Longhorns.

Texas

No team has it rolling like Texas and July was a perfect example of the Longhorns’ reach and power on the recruiting trail. Beating Georgia for five-star linebacker Tyler Atkinson, who took more than a dozen visits to Athens, was the most telling commitment of the month. But getting four-star RB Derrek Cooper over Georgia and Miami was huge, beating South Carolina for four-star CB Samari Matthews was important and flipping four-star DL James Johnson from the Bulldogs was crucial as well. Texas also did some work in-state, which is big to its recruiting strategy, with pledges from four-star OL John Turntine and four-star LB Kosi Okpala.

With the 2025 college football season right on the horizon, the summer recruiting craze is about to slow down. Texas will continue to push for several top targets throughout the season with hopes of closing on them before National Signing Day in December. There are still plenty of talented players to know.

Coach Sarkisian has obviously done some great things since arriving in Austin. He’s a tremendous offensive mind, and a really good evaluator of talent. Sarkisian’s ability to attract and lure that talent to the Longhorns has been a huge reason for the turnaround in his tenure. There is no reason to think that it won’t continue moving forward, just like in July.
