While other teams tip their hand early in the week, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian usually doesn’t release his depth chart until closer to kickoff. The Longhorns finally pulled the curtain back on their two-deep on Saturday.

Eyes immediately dart to running back. CJ Baxter was the team’s returning starter last season, but he suffered torn knee ligaments early in preseason training camp. Jaydon Blue is listed as the Texas starter with Quintrevion Wisner and Jerrick Gibson listed as the backups.

Running back is pivotal as Sarkisian wants to run a balanced attack. And most fans aren’t processing the fact this could be the longest season in Texas history. First comes the 12-game season. Then, if all goes according to play, Texas would play in the SEC championship game.

If the Horns don’t win the conference crown, they would then play — and likely host — a first-round game in the expanded College Football Playoff. One win pushes them into the quarterfinals, then come the semifinals and finally the championship game.

That’s potentially 17 grueling games this season, stretching all the way from August 31 to January 20.

“If you’re in the two-deep (roster), you're playing in the first half,” Sarkisian said Monday.

The Horns don’t have such problems at receiver. Sarkisian said earlier this week he could see Texas rotating three receivers at a time.

Matthew Golden, DeAndre Moore and Isaiah Bond are listed as the top three receivers across the formation. Silas Bolden, Johntay Cook II and Ryan Wingo would be their backups, respectively. The third-stringers listed are Ryan Niblett (H-receiver) and Parker Livingstone (X-receiver).

The rest of the offense include household names, like Quinn Ewers (quarterback), Kelvin Banks Jr. (left tackle) while the new starting tight end is veteran Gunnar Helm.

On defense, the Horns are replacing two tackles who are both now in the NFL. Alfred Collins and Vernon Broughton are both seniors with plenty of experience. Nose tackle Bill Norton is listed as the starting nose tackle who must hold the point of attack.

The question comes in the back end. The pass defense struggled last season, so the Horns went into the transfer portal.

Senior veteran Jahdae Barron is listed as a starting cornerback opposite sophomore Malik Muhammad. Texas landed Clemson transfer safety Andrew Mukuba to pair with UT veteran Michael Taaffe.
