The next chapter of one of the greatest rivalries in college football history is set to be written this week. The Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners are going head-to-head yet again in the Red River Rivalry this week. Texas will be looking to pick up a much-needed win after an embarrassing loss to the Florida Gators last week knocked them out of the AP poll’s top 25. Oklahoma, on the other hand, is hoping to continue its early-season success, which has propelled their ranking up to sixth in the AP poll.

The Red River Rivalry dates back to 1900, when Texas won the first matchup 28-2. The two teams have now played each other 120 times. This week, each team will have the chance to etch their name into the rivalry’s history books. This matchup has the potential to create legends within both fan bases. Have a big day on the field or put together a viral/iconic moment, and you will be remembered forever by the school’s fans. Think Sam Ehlinger’s iconic “We’re back” post-game interview to Caleb Williams and Kennedy Brooks helping the Sooners score 25 unanswered in the fourth quarter to overcome a 21-point deficit. Before this matchup kicks off, though, let’s take a stroll down memory lane at the history of the Red River Rivalry.

Texas leads the all-time series with 64-51, with the game also ending in a tie five times. Texas dominated the early years of this matchup, winning six of the first seven games, with the only other outcome being a tie in 1903. Oklahoma didn’t pick up their first win until 1905 and they had to wait until 1908 to see their second.

Things did shift towards the Sonners’ favor eventually, though. Recent matchups have especially given Oklahoma the advantage. They lead the series 17-8 since 2000 and 11-5 since 2010. These teams have put together so many special games over the years. Eight of the last 11 matchups have all been decided by one score, and the hope is that the two sides can put together another all-timer this week for the fans.
