Almost no other 2025 NFL Draft prospect has risen quite as quickly as Matthew Golden has over the last few months. After it was clear that Isaiah Bond was going to struggle to stay healthy for much of last fall Matthew Golden emerged as the WR1 for the Texas Longhorns.
As Golden's production ramped up down the stretch for Texas, so did his perceived NFL upside. Now it's looking like Golden could make Texas Longhorns history in the 2025 NFL Draft in more ways than one.
Matthew Golden could make Texas history
Matthew Golden was barely a consensus round three wide receiver prior to the Texas Longhorns playoff run into January. However, since then, his projected draft stock has sky rocketed all the way up to consensus pick 19 (as you can see below).

Given that meteoric rise, it shouldn't really be all that surprising, but Matthew Golden accepted an invite to attend the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay. That particular honor is generally reserved for players who are more likely than not to be selected inside the first round. If that happens, Golden might just make some pretty fun history.
Xavier Worthy was a first round pick last year, so many casual NFL fans may not realize just how rare a feat that is for Texas receivers, but he was just the second this century to go inside round one. And Worthy went pick 28. If Golden goes before pick 28 he'll be the second highest selected Texas Longhorns wide receiver this century (behind only Roy Williams).
If he does somehow end up coming off the board before pick seven (where Roy Williams went in 2004) he'll also be the earliest Texas WR selected in the last 25 years overall. That's unlikely. However, if Golden is the first receiver off the board among this class, that will be the first time a Longhorns wide receiver was the first taken at the position since 1980. And there's real steam to suggest that's a serious possibility.
Even if he does drop to the later portion of the first round it would be quite the feat for a player of Golden's background to pull off. Yes, he was a four star recruit, but he transferred from Houston prior to the 2024 season and still immediately forced his way into impressive production. If he becomes a first round pick right after "transferring up" that will be quite the rarity too.
And if he does fall to the late portion of the first round he has a chance to make some pretty special Green Bay Packers history too. It isn't the "chalk" pick, but if Golden is selected by the Packers it will be the first time in over 20 years Green Bay selected a receiver in round one. And to do it in Green Bay? That would be special.
That particular landing spot may seem a bit farfetched or even forced, but the simple truth to take home is that there are several ways Matthew Golden can make incredible history if he does indeed find himself selected in the first round. Let's hope it happens.
