As of Wednesday, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers remains listed as questionable for Saturday’s game against Mississippi State in the Longhorns’ SEC opener.
That’s according to the first SEC availability report involving No. 1 Texas issued by the league office.
There were no great surprises on the first glimpse into the overall health of the Longhorns (4-0, 0-0 SEC). Coach Steve Sarkisian said Monday that Ewers would likely remain listed as questionable on the mid-week report with his strained abdominal injury. Ewers did practice at least Monday, though, Sarkisian said.
Sarkisian will likely give a full update on Ewers' playing status when he meets with Texas reporters on Thursday.

Here’s what Texas QB Quinn Ewers must do to convince Steve Sarkisian he should play in SEC opener
Quinn Ewers did practice on Monday, but his status for Saturday’s game is still questionable
Receiver DeAndre Moore Jr. (hip pointer), defensive back Jelani McDonald (ankle) and running back Quintrevion Wisner (ankle) were also listed as questionable.
Safety Derek Williams Jr. (hamstring) and running back Colin Page were listed as doubtful.
Running backs CJ Baxter (knee) and Christian Clark (Achilles) were lost for the season during training camp and will be out the rest of the season. Running back Velton Gardner was a late August pickup to help bolster depth, but the SMU transfer is now listed as out at least for this week.
Texas HC Steve Sarkisian discusses the real reason SEC coaches agreed to weekly public injury reports
Thursday will mark the first time Texas will issue an in-season injury report, and coach Steve Sarkisian is anxious to get it out there. It’s not because of what it will say. Quarterback Quinn Ewers is expected to be listed as questionable for Saturday’s game against Mississippi State, for example. “I think it’s a good […]
Mississippi State also turned in its availability report, and to the Bulldogs’ chagrin, starting quarterback Blake Shapen (shoulder) is out for the season.
Safety Isaac Smith and kicker Marlon Hauck were listed as probable while cornerbacks DeAgo Brumfield and Traveon Wright and defensive lineman Kedrick Bingley-Jones were all listed as questionable.
The SEC will release availability reports only all intraconference matchups.
“I think it’s a good thing,” Sarkisian said Monday of the availability reports. “So that everyone’s clear of why we do this report, it’s so that we can minimize the leaks and in our buildings from a gambling perspective, if everybody wants to know the truth.
“For everybody that's trying to figure out who's playing and who's not, and then everybody wants to call student trainers and student managers of who practiced, who didn’t, and all these things,” he added. “So at the end of the day, if that minimizes them having to talk to people, I’d just give the report.”
