Texas Longhorns among finalists for 'most physically imposing player in the recruiting cycle'
Texas and Sean Miller made the cut for one of the top 2026 prospects in the country. He tells a recruiting analyst what he’s looking for.
Gillion Basketball Academy (Va.) four-star center Marcis Ponder announced his finalists Tuesday. He tells Rivals' Joe Tipton he is down to Cincinnati, Florida State, Illinois, Indiana, Miami, Providence, and Texas.
Ponder is ranked as the No. 71 overall prospect, per Rivals' Industry Ranking. He's the No. 8 center in the country and the 4th-ranked recruit in the state of Virginia. Ponder has only officially visited one of his finalists (Providence), but he is still pondering his travel plans elsewhere.
“Overall, I don’t currently have any solidified dates for any visits but we will have those soon. I plan to commit sometime in the fall before the season.”
Despite his travel plans being light, he tells Joe Tipton he has an idea of what he wants in a college.
“In my honest opinion, facilities and school life are pretty much the same at majority of the high major schools, what makes the difference are the people running the programs," Ponder said. "I’m the ultimate competitor, I feel like I have the highest motor in the country. I’m looking for a situation where I’m going to play as a freshman and also develop.”
The 7-foot, 288 pound prospect also sat down with Tipton to describe his game and what he could potentially bring to a college for three-to-four years.

As of now, Texas does not have a 2026 commit.
Marcis Ponder has been described as quite possibly one of the most imposing players in the 2026 class.
He recently dominated at the DMV Live Session. Rivals' Jamie Shaw liked what he saw while in attendance – scouting the top players on the court.
Marcis Ponder might be the most physically imposing player in the recruiting cycle. Listed at 6-foot-10, he has reshaped and built up his body to be a sturdy 280 pounds. With that physicality, he plays on both ends of the floor with a vicious mean streak.
On multiple occasions, Ponder would rise up to dunk the basketball and leave the goal apparatus shaking for a good two or three minutes. He tries to break the rim each time he gets within five feet of the basket. He is going to have to continue staying on top of his conditioning, as well as extending his shooting touch. His sheer presence in the paint caused consistent issues for the opposing team. – Jamie Shaw, Rivals
