It’s rivalry week in college football, and a lot is on the line for several notable programs. That includes a lot of postseason dreams, bragging rights, and a lot of pride this week. One of the more interesting games on this weekend’s slate is the battle for South Carolina between the Clemson Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks.
Both teams currently sit right in the thick of the College Football Playoff race, South Carolina with an 8-3 overall record, while Clemson is 9-2. Each of the teams boast very talented quarterbacks, and most fans will want to be talking about both LaNorris Sellers and Cade Klubnik respectively. They will get most of the headlines.
Each team, however, is built around their strong defenses. Both units have had elite moments so far in the 2024 college football season. They each also have dynamic defensive lines, and honestly, those groups could be the difference in deciding this football game. Those groups could neutralize either talented quarterback and make things very difficult on the offenses this Saturday.
For the South Carolina group, there is a legitimate argument this could be the deepest defensive line in all of college football. Whether you are talking about former Georgia Tech transfer Kyle Kennard, true freshman phenom Dylan Stewart, or defensive tackles TJ Sanders and Tonka Hemingway, that group has been incredible. As a foursome, they have combined for 36 tackles for loss, 26 sacks, and seven forced fumbles.
On the Clemson side, their group isn’t far behind that South Carolina defensive line, and perhaps even a hair deeper. They are led by sophomores TJ Parker and Peter Woods, as well as nose tackle DeMonte Capehart. The depth might be even more impressive than the Gamecocks, who also can put players like Jaheim Lawson, Payton Page, Stephiylan Green, and AJ Hoffler. Clemson has received 41 tackles for loss, 15.5 sacks, and five sacks from defensive linemen this season.
Whichever defensive line is most dominant this weekend could signify who is able to come out on top. Memorial Stadium is going to be rocking in this one, and you can’t bet the juices will be flowing as Clemson starts the run down the hill. Once the game kicks off, it’ll be about which team is most dominant in between the lines.
As is typically the case, who controlled the trenches could be the biggest story on Saturday. For those who appreciate a good trench war, make sure to tune in at Noon Eastern time.
