They say that the offseason is where you will really see the successful teams and players start to stand out. Who's going to outwork who? Who's working when others are asleep? Who's going overboard to make sure they become the greatest version of themselves? As of late, the USC Trojans can answer those questions, and the answer to a lot of them is themselves.

This team came up short last season. Well, by came up short, I mean they feel like they were good enough and had a good enough roster and staff to be in the College Football Playoffs, not beating Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl. But, what's done is done, and they are only using a disappointing season as fuel.

And that especially goes for the guys who played last year but are expected to see an even bigger role this year. One of those guys is defensive end Braylan Shelby, who just had a massive moment during an offseason workout.

USC Trojans DE Braylan Shelby has a huge weight room moment

Braylan Shelby is a defensive end for the USC Trojans and a rising talent on their roster. From Friendswood, Texas, he was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2023, standing 6’5” and weighing 235 pounds when he picked USC over Texas in August 2022. He played a bit last year, but in 2025, he's expected to have a big-time role, one much bigger than he did last year.

As a freshman in 2023, Shelby played all 13 games, getting 168 snaps on defense. He finished with 18 tackles, four for loss, two sacks, and a forced fumble. In 2024, his sophomore year, an injury slowed him down, but he still managed 19 tackles, one sack, and a team-high 16 quarterback pressures. He’s strong at holding the edge and chasing players on the edge.

Shelby decided against transferring in December 2024, sticking with USC. Recently a video of him surfaced, and man, it definitely looks like he's been working. Shelby was seen squatting 600 pounds, which is pretty insane to think about. The kid wants to be great, now it's up to him to make the plays.
