While the Dallas Cowboys await their Monday Night Football showdown against the Los Angeles Chargers, Week 6 was relatively friendly to them.
At 3-2 and trailing the Philadelphia Eagles (4-0 entering the weekend) and the San Francisco 49ers (now 5-1), the Cowboys need any help they can get to secure a better seeding in the NFC. It might be October but the experienced fan knows it's never too early to think about that.
Well, the Cowboys got some help from a former friend as the Niners were surprisingly handed a loss: Cleveland Browns WR Amari Cooper.
Cooper, who was controversially traded away by the Cowboys for a fifth-round pick in 2022, had a huge game against the 49ers on Sunday. He racked up 108 yards in four catches as backup P.J. Walker targeted him eight times. For context, Walker totaled 192 passing yards. The Browns wouldn't have won if it wasn't for the 2018 first-round wide receiver.
Cooper had a circus catch near the sideline, which could very well be in the discussion for catch of the year. Per Next Gen Stats, the pass had a 9% probability of being a completion. Cooper changed the math. It wasn't the only big play on the boundary. Plus, the former Cowboys WR drew a penalty in the Browns' game-winning drive.
Cooper's big game is bound to generate some mixed feelings for Cowboys Nation. On the one hand, a Niners' loss is good for a team looking to make up for some lost ground on the top NFC contenders. And hey, maybe it sparks some hope to see the team that just dominated them 42-10 last weekend can actually be beaten.
But on the contrary, it's a reminder of one of the worst decisions the franchise has made in the last few years. Trading Cooper away was a mistake, particularly when it's clear as day that they got rid of him because they simply didn't like him all that much. Since then, the Cowboys have struggled to have a solid WR2 beyond CeeDee Lamb.
Michael Gallup has yet to be the same guy since he injured his knee in January of 2022. Brandin Cooks' impact in 2023 has been limited to nine catches this year. Having Cooper would sure be nice.
For now, fans have to appreciate the indirect help from Coop.
