The offseason is in full swing for the Dallas Cowboys, and they have plenty of things to figure out. Depth on the offensive line and cornerback as well as adding some more bodies to the linebacker position are just a few, but there are more things to get corrected.
Cowboys' wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who was named a second-team All-Pro in 2022, spoke with Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network after Sunday's Pro Bowl festivities, in which he continued to shine like he does when games count. The former Oklahoma Sooner was asked what the Cowboys need more of in 2023, and he hit the nail on the head.
"Of course, add more weapons," Lamb said. "I feel like in that situation you can always be better, you know, it's never enough, you can never run out of ammo. And we just got to finish."
For whatever reason, the Cowboys decided to part ways with veteran wide receiver Amari Cooper last offseason, and their plan to replace what he brought to the table failed miserably. Michael Gallup had flashes during the season, but coming off of an ACL tear just eight months prior, he couldn't give the Cowboys what they needed from their No. 2 option. Also, third-round pick Jalen Tolbert only appeared in eight games and hauled in a measly two receptions.
The Cowboys got more from Lamb (1,359 yards and nine touchdowns) this season than they did from the other seven receivers (1,161 yards and seven touchdowns) on the Cowboys' roster that saw playing time. In the playoffs, it was the same story as Lamb's 185 yards bested the 131 yards from all the other wide receivers.
This highlights how much the lack of weaponry on the Cowboys' offense at wide receiver is a major issue. So, when the NFL draft rolls around, wide receiver should be high on the Cowboys' priority list.
This isn't just a wide receiver thing either with the Cowboys. The truth is, it's possible that running backs Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard won't return in 2023 with the former having such a high salary and the latter being a free agent. Tight end Dalton Schultz played on the franchise tag in 2022 so there may be another hole there despite a plethora of talented players at that position on the roster for Dallas because, as Lamb said, you can never have enough weapons.
The NFL draft is about two months away and the Cowboys will have a chance to pick up some top talent at these positions. Of course, it depends on the mentality of the Cowboys' front office on whether that will happen or not.
