Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy won't be burning the tape of a humiliating loss to the San Francisco 49ers anytime soon. As a coach, it's something he doesn't believe in.

Good. The Cowboys need to take a long look in the mirror (or film) to fix whatever it was that made them look out of their league on Sunday night when the scoreboard read 42-10. And it could've been worse had both teams not pulled starters.

"It’s a punch in the gut, it’s a kick in the ass, whatever phrase you want to put on it," McCarthy told reporters without holding back. "You look at how this season has gone. We’ve been knocked down. Clearly. They beat us in all three phases. We will acknowledge it. I'm not a 'burn the tape' guy. I think that is a crock of shit."

McCarthy's words are brutally honest but entirely correct. The Cowboys didn't look like a team that belonged in the "contenders" conversation when put up against a team that clearly is so at 5-0 and has a recent history of success.

Entering the week, we knew what the 49ers were all about. They've been a great team for years now and they only seem to keep getting better. That was no secret leading up to the primetime showdown. But this year, the Cowboys were expected to take a step forward as a team.

A fully healthy offensive line would be the difference. Brandin Cooks, a new play caller in McCarthy, a first-round defensive tackle, a vastly improved version of Micah Parsons. All of it was surely going to make things work to the point where the Cowboys looked competitive.

They did not.

"They played extremely well and we did not," McCarthy added. "And it was one of the years where I thought we had taken a step as a team. I didn’t see this coming. (…) We did not hit the mark at all today."

The head coach made it clear it starts with accountability. Although he's 100% correct, that won't cut it, however. The Cowboys need much more. They need better play calling, better execution, and better discipline.

The Cowboys sit at 3-2, which isn't the end of the world (or the season, in less dramatic terms). But it sure as heck is not what the franchise envisioned considering the 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles are each 5-0 and sitting at the big-boy table.

The Cowboys are still confused looking at the kid's menu.
