The Dallas Cowboys have wrapped up OTAs and minicamp. Some players have improved their stock, others have some work to do to keep their place on the team.
So, let's dive into what the Cowboys' 53-man roster could look like in September.
Note: Players with a single asterisk (*) are 2023 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2023 undrafted free agents.
Quarterback (2)
IN: Dak Prescott, Cooper Rush
OUT: Will Grier
The skinny: Prescott is completely safe as the starter and should get past his interception woes from a season ago and play at a high level. Rush is a proven backup so he isn't going anywhere. Grier is the odd man out as I don't see the Cowboys carrying three quarterbacks.
Running back (4)
IN: Tony Pollard, Malik Davis, Deuce Vaughn*, Hunter Luepke**
OUT: Ronald Jones, Rico Dowdle
The skinny: Pollard will begin his run as the RB1 for the Cowboys in 2023, there's no doubt about that. Vaughn's ability to be a dynamic weapon can't be denied, Davis will continue to show he's a sleeper for playing time, and Luepke's ability to play over will be valued. I just don't see Jones or Dowdle doing enough to make the roster.
Wide receiver (6)
IN: CeeDee Lamb, Brandin Cooks, Michael Gallup, Jalen Tolbert, KaVontae Turpin, Simi Fehoko
OUT: Dontario Drummond, Dennis Houston, Antonio Callaway, Jalen Brooks*, David Durden**, Jalen Moreno-Cropper**, Jose Barbon**
The skinny: Lamb has proven he's a legit No.1 receiver, and Cooks being added gives the Cowboys a weapon that can stretch the field vertically and horizontally. Gallup will be healthy, that's all anyone needs to know. Tolbert and Fehoko have impressed during OTAs and minicamp, and Turpin will provide more speed to the position plus he'll hold down punt return duties.
Tight end (3)
IN: Jake Ferguson, Peyton Hendershot, Luke Schoonmaker*
OUT: Sean McKeon, Seth Green, Princeton Fant**
The skinny: With Dalton Schultz gone, Ferguson and Hendershot will hold down the top two spots at tight end. Schoonmaker and his ability as a pass catcher and blocker will add some juice to the position.
Offensive line (9)
IN: Zack Martin, Tyron Smith, Tyler Smith, Terence Steele, Tyler Biadasz, Josh Ball, Matt Waletzko, Matt Farniok, Asim Richards*
OUT: Chuma Edoga, Alex Taylor, Brock Hoffman
The skinny: Tyron Smith's health is the big thing with this unit because if he's available he'll contribute big at left tackle. Tyler Smith will be the left guard until the elder Smith misses some time, which is expected and will force him back to tackle. Steele is still working back from a torn ACL, and when he does, he's the starter at right tackle. Rookie Asim Richards will compete at both left guard and tackle. Ball, Waletzko, and Farniok make for decent depth at multiple positions.
Defensive line (11)
IN: Micah Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence, Mazi Smith*, Dorance Armstrong, Osa Odighizuwa, Quinton Bohanna, Dante Fowler, Sam Williams, Chauncey Golston, Johnathan Hankins, Viliami Fehoko*
OUT: Neville Gallimore, Isaac Alarcon, Durrell Johnson** Isaiah Land**
The skinny: Parsons has turned into pretty much a full-time edge rusher, and he's one of the best. Lawrence will continue being the best-run defender on the Cowboys' defense. Smith will be a much-needed addition on the interior to help with stopping the run, and Williams could have a breakout second year. Also, the motor and nastiness of Fehoko may up end being a sleeper addition.
Outside linebacker (3)
IN: Damone Clark, DeMarvion Overshown, Jabril Cox
OUT: Tyrus Wheat**
The skinny: Many thought that Clark wouldn't play last season after having spinal fusion surgery early in 2022. However, he played well beside Leighton Vander Esch. Cox showed the potential he came into the NFL with during OTAs and minicamp which is a great sign. Overshown will push him for reps with his high motor and instincts.
Inside linebacker (2)
IN: Leighton Vander Esch, Devin Harper
OUT: Malik Jefferson
The skinny: Vander Esch played good football in 2022 thanks to his second consecutive season of being relatively healthy, which has been his only hiccup. Harper did his only work on special teams as a rookie last year and will need to develop more to provide solid depth.
Cornerback (6)
IN: Trevon Diggs, Stephon Gilmore, DaRon Bland, Jourdan Lewis, Kelvin Joseph, Eric Scott*
OUT: Nahshon Wright, C.J. Goodwin
The skinny: Diggs and Gilmore have a chance to be one of the better starting duos at cornerback in the NFL. Bland is looking to ride the momentum of his incredible rookie season where he led the Cowboys with five interceptions. He'll battle Lewis for slot corner duties now that Gilmore is on board. Scott has shown great strides as a rookie in OTAs and minicamp.
Safety (4)
IN: Donovan Wilson, Jayron Kearse, Malik Hooker, Israel Mukuamu
OUT: Markquese Bell, Tyler Coyle, Juanyeh Thomas
The skinny: Wilson, Kearse, and Hooker are a well-oiled machine as a three-headed monster at safety. Mukuamu will provide excellent depth and also help out at cornerback. The interesting player in this group is Bell. Although I left him off, his status could go either way.
Special Teams (3)
IN: Tristan Vizcaino(K), Bryan Anger (P), Trent Sieg (LS)
OUT: N/A
The skinny: Vizcaino is in his second stint with the Cowboys and has the inside track to be the Cowboys kicker unless they find another guy on the market. Anger was one of the league's leaders in punt average last year so his spot is secure, and Sieg looks to fill the void left by Jake McQuaide.
Well, there it is. Of course, this all comes down to what the coaches think, so we'll see what happens.
