WR Allen Robinson isn't the fix the Cowboys are looking for

The Dallas Cowboys need to address the position but he might not be the solution.

Any time a big-name player comes available, it's time to analyze why he would (or wouldn't) be a good fit for the Dallas Cowboys. Especially if it's at a position of need and at a discount.

Well, we're starting the week with a real-life example of such a rule.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, there's a new face in the NFL wide receiver market: Allen Robinson, from the Los Angeles Rams.

According to the reporter, the team has given his camp permission to seek a trade and they would be "willing to pay a portion of Robinson's $15.25 million guaranteed salary to facilitate a deal."

It's not the first time the Rams offer to take on a portion of a player's salary in an effort to land better compensation in a trade. But should the Cowboys be interested in Robinson?

As Pelissero tweets, the 29-year-old is still a "big name." But has his production matched it? The short answer is no.

The wide receiver hasn't reached 500 receiving yards in any of the last two seasons. He caught 71 passes in that span while averaging 34 receiving yards per game. It hasn't been pretty.

Yet he's gone over the 1,000 mark three times in his career. And many wonder if the right situation would allow the still-young wideout to bounce back in a big way. After all, he spent four years with the Jacksonville Jaguars, another four with the Chicago Bears, and most recently one year with the torn-apart Los Angeles Rams.

Assuming he wouldn't cost that much in terms of salary and trade compensation, the Cowboys should be interested in at least giving the Rams a call. But one thing is clear.

He's not the way to go to fix the wide receiver position.

There's just too much risk involved in a player that hasn't looked like himself since 2020. On top of that, his injury history is long enough to be concerned about him ever reaching the same production levels as he did before.

"Robinson suffered a stress fracture in his foot ahead of Week 12 and he missed the rest of the season," writes Jourdan Rodrigue from The Athletic. "He underwent minor foot surgery and is expected to be clear for phase two of OTAs."

Consider this: Even offensive guru Sean McVay had a tough time figuring out how to involve Robinson in his offense.

The Cowboys should get a wide receiver to complement CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup (whose play in 2022 left much to be desired and questions about his knee). The lack of a true No. 2 capable of generating separation was a clear problem.

But it's time for a bigger move than a banged-up Allen Robinson.
