In a season of what has mostly been disappointing, the Dallas Cowboys’ bright spots have mostly come from young players. Look no further than rookie Cornerback, Trevon Diggs, who probably played his best game as a Cowboy this past Sunday.
Diggs clearly got the attention of beloved veteran Linebacker, Sean Lee. In his postgame comments, Lee praised Diggs by saying, “The plays he makes, you don’t see young guys making that. It’s a matter of time before he’s one of the best players in the league… that good of a player, that good of an athlete, that good of a person.”
Furthermore, this bodes well for Cowboys fans, who have certainly voiced their opinions on Diggs’ growing pains so far this year. When an icon like Lee speaks up like this, most folks tend to listen.
Trevon’s week 8 game against the Eagles certainly filled up the stat sheet. He tallied seven total tackles. Also, Diggs intercepted Carson Wentz twice while also racking up four passes defended. The young CB had a total of four passes defended in his first six NFL games. In the last two weeks, Diggs has provided the secondary with six of them! Alternatively, he did allow a touchdown pass to Travis Fulgham. Although, it took a great route and an almost-perfect throw to beat Diggs in the endzone. It was certainly his best overall performance from a coverage standpoint.
Coming out of Alabama, Diggs was regarded as a fairly raw Cornerback prospect with immense upside due to his physical traits and ball skills. So far, he’s mostly lived up to that billing. He will only continue to polish his game further with more and more reps throughout the season.
Not to mention, he’s been Dallas’ go-to guy to cover the opposition’s top receiver for the most part. While this may not show glowing plays from Diggs, it gives him reps against the best receivers in the league. That practice is extremely valuable for a guy that is still perfecting many parts of his game and fine-tuning the technicalities of the position.
Overall, this Dallas rookie class also seems to be coming together nicely. Between CeeDee Lamb, Trevon Diggs, Tyler Biadasz, and Neville Gallimore, there seems to be a lot of future talent that will stick around on the roster. That’s very meaningful for the future when a season is not going as planned.
