The Dallas Cowboys have a wide receiver problem entering the 2022 NFL season.
Aside from CeeDee Lamb, the position is lacking any production on the professional level. Michael Gallup and James Washington are set to miss multiple games. That means that the Cowboys do not have a receiver with a receiving touchdown outside of Lamb.
Dalton Schultz helps at tight end. The team also is hopeful that rookie Jalen Tolbert is ready to make an impact. Veteran receiver Noah Brown has impressed in training camp with new opportunities presented to him.
Still, the Cowboys would be wise to go out and add a pass catcher through free agency.
Will Fuller is a popular name, though the speedster struggles to stay healthy. Cole Beasley would make sense on paper, but it remains to be seen if there is mutual interest. Emmanuel Sanders is another intriguing option.
That said, there is one name that would really move the needle — at least when it comes to the playoffs:
Odell Beckham Jr.
Why OBJ makes sense for Cowboys
Odell Beckham is still available ahead of the 2022 season. The former Giants star emerged as a difference-maker for the Rams before tearing his ACL during a stellar Super Bowl performance. He is still on the market for the Cowboys to sign.
One on hand, Beckham — like Gallup — will miss the beginning of the season. Therefore, he would not be an immediate help, which would obviously be a big purpose in signing a receiver right now.
However, Beckham should be full-go late in the season and ready to make an impact for a contending squad.
Dallas would need to lean on its current group until Gallup and/or Washington return if OBJ is the target. Therefore, the current problem of the position being a question mark would not be solved.
On the flip side, the pay-off would potentially be big.
The Dallas Cowboys would be wise to look into what it would take to add Odell Beckham to the roster. While it would not solve anything in the short-term, the long-term bonus makes the potential signing worthwhile.
A Cowboys offense with Dak Prescott throwing the ball to CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Odell Beckham would be a lot of fun. That combination could get the Cowboys over the hump.
