For the first time in his career, running back Tony Pollard will be the lead horse after the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with Ezekiel Elliott.
Behind Pollard on the depth chart, there's veteran Ronald Jones. Also, there's Malik Davis and Rico Dowdle. However, neither has their role edged in stone yet, so the Cowboys could use another weapon in the backfield.
In a recent mock draft by Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus, he has the Cowboys taking Texas A&M running back Devon Achane in the second round.
Low-4.3s running backs with legit receiving skills don’t last long. The two-headed Cowboys backfield just got a lot more dynamic.
Achane was the backup to Isaiah Spiller as a true freshman in 2020. He only rushed for 125 yards in the first four games he appeared in, but then he started to show his worth. In a win against Auburn, Achane ran for 99 yards on nine carries.
Achane put the nation on notice in the 2021 Orange Bowl. He ran for 140 yards and two touchdowns and won MVP honors. Achane backed up Spiller again as a sophomore. Spiller was a first-team All-SEC, but Achane was no slouch as he registered 910 yards and nine touchdowns.
It was time for Achane to be the man for the Aggies last season, and he didn't disappoint. He ran for 1,102 yards and eight touchdowns and added another 196 yards and three scores as a receiver out of the backfield. Achane received first-team All-SEC honors as a result.
Achane's 4.32 in the 40-yard dash was the fastest for all running backs at the NFL combine. He's able to keep his speed while making guys miss with his elusiveness, and once he's in the open field, it's a wrap, you're not catching him.
He may only be 5'8 1/2" and 188 pounds, but Achane runs hard between the tackles, and he can also line up in the slot and be an effective pass catcher.
Achane is a weapon, plain and simple, and he would give the Cowboys more speed at the skill positions which they need desperately.
