The Dallas Cowboys are rounding out their coaching staff hires after letting many members of last year's staff go. Expiring contracts resulted in the departures of OL coach Joe Philbin, RB coach Skip Peete, QB coach Doug Nussmeier, and OC Kellen Moore, among others.
Earlier this year, the Cowboys announced Scott Schottenheimer as offensive coordinator and Mike Solari as the new OL coach. The team also added Will Harriger as an offensive assistant (and he could play a bigger role than many expect him to).
But on Wednesday, the team reportedly added more pieces to the puzzle, per ESPN's Todd Archer. The Cowboys are promoting several coaches to bigger roles:
- Jeff Blasko was promoted to RB coach and run game coordinator.
- Scott Tolzien was promoted to QB coach.
- Scott McCurley will retake control of LB.
- Cannon Matthews was promoted to assistant DB coach.

Coaching updates confirm the suspicion around the Cowboys' coaching staff
The recent updates serve as confirmation of what many already thought about the direction the Cowboys were going. After trying to marry "McCarthy's guys" with "front office" guys, it seems like the head coach was given more than the play-calling duties: he was given full control of the staff.
After all, we know who will be calling the shots on offense at every level. McCarthy will install his offense, game plan, and call the plays. His coaches will be there to execute his desires, basically.
Blasko spent 2016-2018 with the Green Bay Packers and has been with Dallas since 2020 in a lesser role. Tolzien is also a certified McCarthy guy having spent three seasons as a player with the Packers.
These two promotions on the offensive side of things drive home the point that was already clear with the Schottenheimer/Solari hirings: Ultimately, it will all fall on how the Cowboys HC performs as the driver of the offense.
These are the McCarthy Cowboys. And his job is likely on the line.
